Sporty heroes in Warnemünde: DLRG-Cup inspires with 240 athletes!
Warnemünde, Deutschland - On July 17, 2025, Warnemünde became the scene of the 27th International DLRG Cup. Around 240 rescue athletes from around 35 DLRG local groups as well as international guests from Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland compete against each other in exciting competitions. The event extends over three days, from Thursday to Saturday, and promises exciting competitions both in the beach and in the open water area.
The athletes measure their skills in a total of six individual and five team disciplines. Above all, the focus is on the speed at sprints on land and the safe handling of rescue equipment in the water. DLRG President Vogt expressed that this competition not only promotes sporting enthusiasm, but also a practical training that conveys life-saving skills. Finally, the DLRG rescue swimmers were able to save almost 1,500 people from drowning last year, which underlines the importance of the event again.
competition types and disciplines
During the DLRG Cup, the athletes rely on a combination of speed and technology. The types of competitions range from beach to free water competitions, whereby the participants give everything in their respective disciplines to secure a place on the podium. The competition not only promotes the athletes' sporting skills, but also stands for the commitment of the DLRG to ensure and promote security in the water, which also testify to the numerous successful rescue operations that took place in 2024.
And if you think the first big event is the biggest climax, you are wrong: these sporting challenges run throughout the year. In May 2025, the 6th International German Individual Train Championships took place in the lifeguard swimming in Mönchengladbach. About 350 lifeguards from Germany and other European countries fought for the title here, while they competed for medals and fame in different age groups and disciplines. The U17 and U19 in particular were strongly represented, which shows that the promotion of young talent from the DLRG looks back on a long tradition and invests in the future.
international competitions and perspectives
But not only local events are on the radar of the DLRG. The world championships in life swimming take place every two years, in which national teams and clubs fight for the titles. The European Championships organized by the International Lifesaving Federation Europe also contribute to the international networking and competitiveness of the athletes. An exciting opportunity for the junior swimmers is the Junior European Championship, in which the DLRG participates with a selection.
This year the DLRG does not remain idle, because the World Games, which take place every four years after the Olympic Games and in which eight national teams struggle for honor and medals, are also just around the corner. This shows that the rescue sport is constantly on the upper and the DLRG athletes are continuously developing. Their commitment as sports soldiers of the Bundeswehr, who train at the sports school in Warendorf, forms a solid basis for further success on international parquet.
Overall, the organizers and athletes are looking forward to an exciting weekend in Warnemünde. The connection of sporty competition and the possibility of demonstrating your own rescue competence attracts not only the athletes, but also numerous spectators who come together around the coastal town. An event that is very popular in the region and beyond!
