Pure drama: Stavenhagen handball ladies win at the last second!
An exciting duel took place last Saturday in Stralsund when the handball players from Stavenhagener SV competed against Stralsund HV. In a closely fought game, the Stavenhagen women ultimately triumphed 19:18 and secured important points in the regional league. Annemarie Brandt, the SSV goalkeeper, once again proved to be the hero of the game. Just three seconds before the end she prevented Stralsund from equalizing, who were still leading 18:17 in the 58th minute.
In the critical phase of the game, Hanna Naussed received a two-minute penalty, which put SSV in an advantageous situation. Amelie Sandberg and Johanna Liebich used this chance to turn the game around and ultimately win the narrow victory. After the game, coach Torsten Richter was critical of his team's offensive performance. He described the victory as a “dirty victory”, but praised the strong defensive work, especially the commitment of Annemarie Brandt and Christin Jonassen, who was the SSV's best thrower with six goals.
A look at the table position
With this win, Stavenhagener SV now has 10:10 points and is currently in sixth place in the table. The next meeting is scheduled for next Sunday: at 5 p.m. against SV Fortuna Neubrandenburg. In this context, the SSV lady will do everything in her power to further improve performance.
The SSV line-up for the game against Stralsund was as follows: Fink, Brandt, Nowatzki, Liebich (5 goals), Jonassen (6 goals), Schischke, Engfer (2 goals), Döbler (2 goals), Kaur, Sandberg (3 goals), Schuck (1 goal) and Ziegler. The team is showing a good knack for keeping up in the regional league.
The handball hype in Germany
Handball is one of the most popular sports in Germany, right after football. The German Handball Bundesliga (HBL) attracts large crowds with around 1.5 million spectators per season, and the German Handball Association (DHB) has over 765,000 members. This trend is not only evident in the Bundesliga, but also at international events. The Handball World Cup, which recently took place in Croatia, Denmark and Norway, caused excitement across Germany, especially after the German team was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Portugal. The Danes, for their part, were able to win the title for the fourth time in a row, which further increases the popularity of handball.
Compared to other sports, handball has a high status, which is not only due to the number of spectators, but also to the history of the league and the various consecutive championships. The enthusiasm for the sport is unbroken, not least because of exciting games such as the derby between SSV and Stralsunder HV.
It remains to be seen how the women's team's form will continue, but the fans in Stavenhagen have every reason to be confident. Here's to the next matches!
