Three dead on Rügen: Police warn of contaminated drugs!

A tragic event has shaken the Western Pomerania region: three men, including two Germans and a Tunisian citizen, have died in the last few days. The bodies were found in Sagard on the island of Rügen and in the Stralsund area. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reports, the police urgently warn against the consumption of possibly contaminated drugs that are circulating in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The victims, whose cause of death initially remains unclear, could have died from manipulated substances. However, the toxicological reports have not yet been completed and will take several weeks. In the meantime, the responsible investigative authorities are investigating. The criminal police have initiated a death investigation in all three cases n-tv -Reporting added.

Increase in drug deaths

The number of drug-related deaths in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has risen worryingly. Until 2019, the annual number of victims was in the single digits, but from 2020 to 2021 this number doubled dramatically to 20. In subsequent years, the numbers were also alarming: 11 people died in 2022, 16 in 2023 and 15 drug deaths in 2024. This underlines the increasing danger posed by illegal drugs and their consequences.

It is particularly tragic that underage young people are also affected. A 13-year-old girl from Altentreptow died in 2023 from high-dose ecstasy, known as the “Blue Punisher”. In September 2024, a 15-year-old in Zingst died after consuming “Red Super Marios” pills. Drug expert Gernot Rücker warns that every fifth drug consumed is manipulated, which can lead to fatal overdoses.

Shocking trends in drug use

The dangers of contaminated drugs are not just theoretical. Rücker gives examples of manipulations in which coke is mixed with sugars or cannabis is contaminated with lead. This shows how crucial drug checking would be to test drug ingredients. The police in Neubrandenburg also reported high levels of amphetamine in wastewater and also noted an increase in the use of ketamine, which is used both in medicine and as a drug.

The situation surrounding drug use in the region represents a serious challenge for both the police and society and requires rapid action. It is hoped that the investigation will help clarify the deaths and create greater awareness of the dangers of drugs.
