On the night of January 16, 2026, unknown perpetrators hit a medical supply store on Bahnhofstrasse in Grimmen. The break-in occurred between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. and caused significant property damage. In addition to cash and technical equipment, the thieves also got their hands on an electric wheelchair. However, this could later be secured in Bahnhofstrasse. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at over 5,000 euros, as news.de reports.

Immediately after the incident, the officers from the criminal investigation service began searching and securing evidence and began investigations into particularly serious theft. The police in Grimmen are asking the public for information, especially from people who have made suspicious observations between the specified times or who can provide information about the perpetrators. Information can be reported by telephone on 038326/ 570 or via the police online watchdog at www.polizei.mvnet.de.

More break-ins in Western Pomerania

While the search for the perpetrators is underway in Grimmen, the region is not spared from further break-ins. In Zingst, also in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, unknown perpetrators struck in two restaurants - a kebab shop and a Greek restaurant - between Sunday evening and Monday morning. Here, too, the daily cash registers were emptied, with the thieves stealing three-digit amounts of cash. During the same period, there was also a break-in at a warehouse in Grimmen, where a Stihl hedge trimmer and a chainsaw were stolen. The total damage here amounts to around 1,000 euros, as ndr.de reports.

The police are also investigating these cases and are calling for anyone to report suspicious observations. In addition, a robbery at a casino in Ribnitz-Damgarten was prevented, in which a 63-year-old employee was able to scare away a perpetrator who was armed with pepper spray and a sharp object. The perpetrator description: around 20 years old, slim, 1.85 meters tall, dressed in black clothing with white sneakers and spoke German without an accent.

Burglar myths and statistics

The situation with the numerous burglaries also throws light on the current burglary statistics in Germany. According to home-insider.de, a total of 77,819 residential burglaries were registered in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. On average, around 213 break-ins occurred per day, with an average loss of €3,500 per incident.

What is particularly noteworthy is that cities in particular are affected by higher numbers of burglaries. The police advise taking technical security measures - such as electronic alarm systems and mechanical locking systems - to better protect your home. Due to the increasing number of break-ins, awareness of preventive measures is becoming increasingly important, with the police offering free security advice.

The number of burglaries appears to be increasing again after the Corona pandemic and citizens in the region are well advised to be vigilant and take safety precautions.
