Floods in MV: Current water levels ensure alert!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the level of water in the Baltic Sea is currently in focus, especially after the violent storm surges that last occurred in October. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper The measuring station in Warnemünde shows a significant average of 617 cm for the mean high water (MHW) between 2010 and 2020, while the mean low water (MNW) is 407 cm. However, one should not lose sight of the historical records: the highest flood level was measured at 770 cm in 1872, while the lowest was 332 cm in 1967.
The storm surge classes range from a mild storm surge with a rise of 1.00 to 1.25 m above the mean water level to very severe storm surges that exceed the water level by more than 2.00 m. It is therefore important to keep an eye on developments. During the last extreme weather events, the city of Sassnitz had to fear significant damage amounting to 56 million euros, with around 42 million euros needed to rebuild the infrastructure and a further six million euros to replenish sand on beaches and dunes.
