After the death of a police officer: parents demand new investigations in MV

A tragic incident overshadowed a training course in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in October 2021, when a 24-year-old police officer from Hamburg collapsed during a night march in Bad Sülze and died a short time later. The affected relatives are now demanding strict consequences and have filed another complaint against the termination of the investigation. This made the Baltic Sea newspaper public.

On the evening of the incident, the young police officer complained of difficulty walking and ultimately had to be carried by other participants. His parents are visibly affected and are committed to ensuring that the circumstances of his death are fully investigated. The Stralsund public prosecutor's office discontinued the investigation in May 2022 because no evidence of criminally relevant third-party negligence could be found. After the parents lodged a complaint, the investigation was reopened on the instructions of the MV Public Prosecutor's Office.

Renewed investigations and legal action

Just over two weeks ago, the discontinuation of the proceedings was again based on a lack of suspicion. It was found that none of the accused police officers could be proven to have breached the duty of care. The General Public Prosecutor's Office and the Stralsund Public Prosecutor's Office have confirmed receipt of the new complaint and it is now being examined. The relatives hope for a review and possibly a reopening of the investigation.

If the decision is against resuming the investigation, the public prosecutor in Rostock could become involved in the matter. In the event of a negative decision, the relatives would be responsible, according to the Lawyer Page The Higher Regional Court in Rostock is also open as the next instance.

Aim of the investigation

An investigation is usually initiated as soon as the police or public prosecutor's office becomes aware of a possible crime. The aim of this procedure is to preserve evidence, that is, to identify facts and evidence in order to obtain clarification about the incident. This is done, among other things, by questioning witnesses and securing evidence. In the case of the deceased police officer, the relatives try to obtain all relevant information and demonstrate that all due care may not have been followed.

Finally, it remains to be seen how the responsible authorities will react to the renewed complaint. The question arises: Will the hoped-for answers to the question of responsibility actually be found? The deceased police officer's relatives seem determined and will do everything they can to get justice for their son.
