Senior citizen accident in Stralsund: 81-year-old drives into oncoming traffic!

On the evening of November 22nd, 2025, there was a traffic accident on the L222, Greifswalder Chaussee in Stralsund, which had a major impact on events in the region. According to news.de, the accident occurred around 5:35 p.m. when an 81-year-old driver of a Volvo with an unlit vehicle drove into oncoming traffic. There he collided sideways with a Toyota that was being driven by a 64-year-old from Stralsund. Fortunately, both drivers were uninjured, but they have to expect significant material damage of around 4,000 euros. Both vehicles were no longer drivable and had to be towed away.

The L222 was temporarily completely closed due to the accident. Police officers, the fire department and an ambulance quickly arrived at the scene of the accident and took initial action. The Stralsund criminal police have taken over the investigation into the exact cause of the accident. Of particular importance here is the suspicion of a risk to road traffic due to the older driver's physical deficiencies. His driver's license was confiscated - a measure that is common practice in such cases to ensure road safety.

Statistical backgrounds

The issue of traffic accidents, particularly the role of older road users, is of particular importance. According to a current press release from destatis.de, in 2023 more than two thirds of the traffic accidents that resulted in personal injuries were caused by drivers aged 65 and over. The hairiest age groups deserve particular attention - people over 75 were the main culprits in 76.7 percent of cases. These numbers illustrate how important it is to increase road safety for seniors.

The circumstances that lead to accidents range from failure to give way to incorrect turning. Older people are often unprotected pedestrians and are at higher risk of serious injury. It is therefore essential that both the transport infrastructure and individual behavior in road traffic are continually questioned and optimized.

It remains to be seen whether the most recent incident in Stralsund will give rise to a discussion about road safety and measures based on it. What is clear, however, is that it is time to look into the topic in more detail. Awareness and education could be the key to preventing future accidents.
