Stralsund is preparing for the colorful Wallenstein Days!

Things come to life again in Stralsund at the end of July when the city hosts its annual Wallenstein days celebrates. This impressive event commemorates the heroic resistance of the people of Stralsund against the siege by imperial troops in 1628 during the Thirty Years' War. A historical spectacle not only offers exciting insights into history, but also attracts numerous visitors from near and far.

There is already a lot of interest because costume rentals have started. Anyone who would like to transform themselves into the role of noblemen, traders, mercenaries, maids, jugglers or even plague victims can register in costume until July 19th. A maximum of six costumes will be rented at a time, and helpers will be available to provide assistance with selection. The prerequisites for renting are an ID card and a large bag - after all, you can never have enough space for all the beautiful clothes!

A lively market

The program of the Wallenstein days promises a lot of variety. From the Old Market to the Kniepertor there will be a colorful market with jugglers, acrobats and minstrels. The event begins on Friday with a traditional parade that starts at 4 p.m. at Neuer Markt and ends about 45 minutes later at Hanse-Wiese. A highlight will be the “Plague Train”, a gruesome spectacle that takes place from the Old Market to the Kniepertor from 10 p.m.

Things get sporty at the equestrian games of Wallenstein's cuirassiers: These take place several times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and promise exciting competitions in historical garb. A beautiful baroque fireworks display, which will be lit in front of the town hall facade on Saturday at 11 p.m., rounds off the program.

A look into history

The roots of the Wallenstein Days go back deep into the history of Stralsund. In 1628 the city was under siege during the Thirty Years' War Albrecht of Wallenstein and his imperial army. The Stralsund council had to make tough decisions to assert themselves against the threat. With the support of the Danish and Swedish kingdoms, the occupation was prevented, and Stralsund emerged as an important player in the resistance against the imperial troops.

The Wallenstein Days are not only a look back into history, but also a celebration of togetherness and cultural exchange. Visitors are invited to imagine themselves in those times and experience history in a very special way. With delicious food, music and a lively market, there is something for everyone.
