Stralsund invests 800,000 euros: schools in the holiday glow-up!
While the approximately 5,000 students and their teachers in Stralsund are relaxing on their well-deserved summer holidays, the schools in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund are working hard. Extensive repair and beautification measures are being carried out at a total of 16 educational institutions in order to sustainably improve the learning environment. The city is investing almost 800,000 euros to give the schools a fresh coat of paint and carry out the necessary renovations.
There are several larger projects on the agenda this year. The most important item is the window renovations in the sports hall of the Marie Curie School, which cost 420,000 euros. Cleaning up water damage in the Burmeister sports hall also cost the city around 45,000 euros. At many other schools, maintenance work is carried out on windows and doors for around 28,000 euros. Smaller but no less important are the repairs to the main entrance doors, which are estimated at 7,500 euros.
Beautification measures and minor work
But that's not all: around 35,000 euros are earmarked for painting work at the schools, while around 55,000 euros have been earmarked for flooring work. The schools' playgrounds are also to be upgraded, with around 25,000 euros being used for repairs to playground equipment, hammocks and to replenish wood chips. Some projects were even brought forward, including roof waterproofing and painting work on the Rosa Luxemburg sports hall and renovation work on the production school.
In the Diesterweg school, the parquet in the classrooms and in the corridor is being renovated, while important acoustic measures are being implemented in the Andershof elementary school. A new bench will also be installed in the green area at Schill Elementary School to make the area more attractive.
The big challenge of school infrastructure
These investments are no coincidence. Even though Stralsund is progressively responding to the needs of students with these measures, the reality in many schools in Germany is alarming. Generous investments in school infrastructure, such as in Stralsund, are essential to counteract the investment backlog in this area, which has now reached 54.8 billion euros. A lack of funding and bureaucratic hurdles often make it difficult for municipalities to act quickly.
In order to meet the demands of increasing student numbers and inclusion work, a flexible and sustainable approach to construction measures is recommended. Modular educational buildings, as the Chur model from Switzerland shows, could offer a quick and cost-effective solution to meet the growing need for modern and functional school buildings.
The ongoing work at the Stralsund schools ensures that students are welcomed after the holidays in an environment that contributes to a modern learning environment. This is a step in the right direction and shows that the city of Stralsund is making efforts to make educational institutions fit for the future, even if the challenges in the German education system are far from being overcome.
