Stralsund's bridge dismantled: open-air arena opened, Netto modernized!
Things have been busy in Stralsund in the last few days! The one in dire need of renovation Ferry bridge, which connects the old town with the northern harbor island, was completely dismantled on July 1st and 2nd. Due to the unsatisfactory condition, the renovation was urgently needed. The bridge, which is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists and is over 17 meters long and weighs 12 tons, will be taken to Lauterbach to be renovated.
This renovation includes numerous measures such as corrosion protection and the renewal of the turning system. The costs are around 440,000 euros and the work is scheduled to be completed in November 2025. During the renovation, pedestrians and cyclists have to be prepared for a detour of around 100 meters.
Open-air arena and new supermarket
But there are not only construction sites in Stralsund! The largest local club, SportLive e.V., has inaugurated a new open-air arena. With a floor space of 40×20 meters, this sports hall is now available next to the Rosa Luxemburg sports hall. In addition to the almost 1,500 members, other clubs and private individuals can also rent the hall. A real benefit for sport in the region!
But a lot is also happening on the purchasing side: The Net market in Grünhufe modernized and converted its branch after the Kühl bakery moved out. With around 8,500 customers, this market is the highest-selling in Stralsund and is planning a major expansion of the sales area, which currently amounts to 900 square meters. Here you can get started right away!
Autumn challenges
Between renovations and new openings, there are also challenges in the economy. The facility chain hammer has filed for bankruptcy on its own initiative. Experts are optimistic that there is hope for the company to continue in this process. Business operations are continuing for the time being; in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are twelve Hammer furniture stores and a Schlau crafts market.
Aside from these economic issues, judicial clarity was also created: The Greifswald Administrative Court ruled that the police intervened disproportionately in February 2024 when they took a student out of class because of right-wing extremist postings on TikTok. This ruling protects students' rights and calls on the authorities to take a thoughtful approach. Loretta's family is also planning to file a lawsuit against the school principal who informed the police - proceedings are still pending here due to possible violations of school law.
In the midst of all these changes, it is also important to take safety on the roads into account. There is increased emphasis on road safety in order to get closer to the goal of Vision Zero: no traffic fatalities or serious injuries. In this sense, various actors are committed to a comprehensive road safety concept in order to protect citizens and reduce accidents mobilitaetsforum.bund.de.
