Storm alarm: Heavy rain threatens Berlin and Brandenburg!

The weather in northern Germany is unsettled and unpleasant at the beginning of the week. After a rainy weekend, the German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts indicate severe storms. Extreme rainfall is expected in Saxony, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, which in certain areas between Rostock and Stralsund can even amount to 140 liters per square meter within 12 hours. These breathtaking amounts of rain are reminiscent of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley and are keeping the authorities on alert. The warnings are in effect from this afternoon until midday Tuesday, so residents should prepare for severe weather.

In addition, the situation in Berlin began at midday with a heavy rain shower. Caution is also advised in the rest of Lower Saxony. Up to 70 liters of rain per square meter are expected here, especially in the west of the state, where the risk of severe weather is particularly high.

Warnings and initial effects

The DWD has issued the highest warning level for the east and northeast of Germany. Motorists who are currently on the road should exercise particular caution as there is a risk of aquaplaning and basements can quickly be flooded. Flood protection measures have already been recommended in the city of Rostock and the population has been informed via a warning app. This goes hand in hand with the information that Autobahn 72 in Vogtland, Saxony, was also closed due to flooding, which is sure to cause inconvenience for travelers.

The rainfall not only causes flooded streets, but also weather-related cancellations of major events. An open-air concert by the popular singer Robbie Williams in Berlin had to be postponed to Wednesday due to the weather. Anna Netrebko's concert at the Gendarmenmarkt also did not take place; an alternative date is still pending. According to tagesschau.de, there were no major weather-related problems for the emergency services in Berlin until Monday evening.

What's next with the weather?

If you look at the coming days, the weather will remain changeable. In southern Germany, new thunderstorms are forecast overnight, accompanied by further rainfall of between 15 and 25 liters per square meter. In Lower Saxony, temperatures are likely to be between 21 degrees on the coast and up to 26 degrees in Osnabrück. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast again on Tuesday, with highs between 20 and 23 degrees and temperatures on Tuesday night between 14 and 17 degrees.

Just a look at the storm map from the Severe Weather Center shows the dramatic weather situation. Here you will find ongoing current information about storms, whether it is heavy rain or thunderstorms. Future severe weather warnings will be issued in different color scales from yellow for advance warnings to purple for extreme weather conditions.

In this sense, the population needs to be well prepared, take the current warnings seriously and get through these uncertain days safely. Nature is once again showing its wild side and demands that we act thoughtfully and carefully.
