Complete closure of the Rügen Bridge: Important maintenance work begins!
The Rügen Bridge will be completely closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week, more precisely on September 21st and 22nd, 2025, due to necessary maintenance work. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., drivers must prepare for detours such as: South German newspaper reported. The Rügendamm, which runs parallel to the bridge, is available for the bypass.
This is not the first time that road users have to prepare for these construction measures. In recent years, the Rügen Bridge has been closed several times, for example to replace electrical displays and to maintain the drainage systems. This maintenance work is urgently needed to ensure the safety and durability of the bridge, as well as the NDR emphasized.
Bridge maintenance and safety
Why is such maintenance work necessary? In Germany it is required by law that bridges be inspected every six years. During the main inspection, the underside of the bridge is inspected using an under-bridge device located in a truck. This device can lift a 12 meter walkway under the bridge to carry out comprehensive inspections. The camera technology on the bridges will also be renewed. Road safety is also being worked on on other roads parallel to the Rügen Bridge, such as on the B96 between Altefähr and the Bergen roundabout.
Bridges under pressure
What are the chances that the Rügen Bridge will be in service for many more years? In Germany, many bridges are dilapidated and require regular maintenance. This is primarily due to the increasing increase in traffic, particularly heavy transport, which has increased steadily over the past few decades. Bridges like the Rügen Bridge often date from the 1960s, a time when traffic volumes were not yet predictable, and many show defects earlier than the predicted 70 to 80 years of service life. The Planet knowledge Platform explains that during these inspections, bridge inspectors not only assess the stability, but also the traffic safety and the expected service life of the structures.
It remains to be hoped that the upcoming maintenance work on the Rügen Bridge and the B96 will be successful so that we can all continue to travel safely.
