35 years of the MV Festival: A musical anniversary in Wismar!
There is music in the air in Wismar! They started on June 13, 2025 Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival into its 35th season. There was a magnificent opening concert in the sold-out Georgenkirche under the direction of 97-year-old conductor Herbert Blomstedt. Presented in front of an enthusiastic audience NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra including Beethoven's 2nd Symphony.
The festive opening was peppered with magical moments: soprano Regula Mühlemann delighted the audience with a Bach cantata, while three students from the Rostock University of Music and Theater presented a premiere of the “Song of Songs of Love”. Matthias von Hülsen, the founder of the festival, was visibly satisfied with the development of the festival so far and its importance for the region.
Diverse program until September
The festival offers a total of 136 events at 96 different venues until September 14, 2025, including manor houses, churches and parks. Director Ursula Haselböck repeatedly emphasizes the unifying effect of music, which attracts and encourages people from all over the region. A special highlight is the Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina, who is part of the program as a prizewinner in residence with 20 concerts, and there are numerous opportunities to experience the great diversity of classical music.
A crossover concert on July 5th in the Fleesensee Castle Park with artists such as Johannes Strate from Revolverheld and jazz pianist Martin Tingvall will delight the audience, while an open-air weekend on August 23rd and 24th at Bothmer Castle with the NDR Big Band will round off the festival in a special way. The finale will be a concert on September 14th in the Neubrandenburg Concert Church with cellist Anastasia Kobekina and the NDR Radiophilharmonie.

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival has now become one of the largest classical music festivals in Germany and attracts not only local music lovers, but also many tourists. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig praised the organizers at the opening and paid respect to the festival for its 35-year history. The first performance took place on May 13, 1990 in the Schwerin State Theater. Since then, the festival has grown steadily and offers a wide range of events. From the small festival in the Great Park in Ludwigslust to top-class concerts, everyone has something to suit their taste.
