TKMS IPO: 1,500 new jobs for Wismar by 2029!
There is a lot of excitement in Wismar at the moment, and there are several good reasons for that. On the occasion of the upcoming IPO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) on October 20th, the shipyard city will become even more exciting. The IPO is part of a major restructuring of the company, which is now increasingly focusing on building submarines and other ships. From 2027, submarines for the Federal Navy will be manufactured in Wismar, which will not only improve the location but also create numerous new jobs.
According to TKMS plans, the number of employees at the shipyard in Wismar will be increased from the current around 100 to up to 1,500 by 2029. In 2025 alone, around 100 new employees are to be hired in the underwater sector, as well as 60 trainees. This development is particularly important for the region, which is now finally thriving again after economic challenges. However, Wismar's mayor Thomas Beyer also expressed concerns about the necessary infrastructure, especially with regard to living space and daycare places, in order to offer the new employees an appropriate quality of life. [NDR] reports on the large order that TKMS received from the federal government - a total of six submarines are recorded in the order book.
Honoring committed Wismar women
Last weekend, special personalities were honored for their commitment in Wismar. Five women and men from northwest Mecklenburg received the badge of honor, including Elke Rohlfs from the Niederdeutsche Bühne and Katrin Sültmann from “Wismar Helps”. Your voluntary work in your free time helps to strengthen the sense of community in the region. Anyone who would also like to nominate someone for this award can send this directly to the district administration.
Arson in Wismar
However, there were negative headlines due to a fire that destroyed several waste paper containers on Weidendammstrasse and Kurze-Baustrasse in Wismar. The flames quickly spread to neighboring bushes, so the criminal police are now looking for witnesses. The damage amounts to a low four-digit amount, which is very annoying for the city and its citizens.
A young master in the starting blocks
However, 22-year-old Marvin Gerdau from Grevesmühlen, who is considered the best roofer in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is in a positive light. With a grade point average of 1.45, he even completed his training six months early. His qualifications allow him to take part in the German Championships, and if he performs well he could even get the chance to take part in the World Championships in Budapest next year. There is clearly great talent in the air!
The developments in Wismar show that there is both good news and challenges in the city. The next few months will be crucial, especially when it comes to the creation of new jobs and the business location. [Ostsee-Zeitung] has looked at these facets in detail and we can look forward to seeing what the future holds for Wismar.
