Dreigroschenoper in Wismar: A theater classic returns!

Wismar, Deutschland - Wismar will be the setting for a very special cultural event again this year. The theater summer 2025 invites all theater fans to experience one of the most famous theater performances in the world: Bertolt Brecht's "Dreussenoper". The performances take place in the picturesque St. Georgen Church and run until August 9th. On July 4, the staging started with a premiere that inspired the audience.

The "Dreigroschenoper" tells the gripping story of Mackie Messer, a gangster boss in London, who falls in love with Polly Peachum. Polly's father, Jonathan Peachum, fears that Mackie could ruin his business and reveals him. In a dramatic game for power and betrayal, Mackie flees into a whores' house, but is revealed by his ex-loved Jenny and wrongly arrested. His beloved Lucy, the daughter of the police chief Brown, is his last rescue, but things take a dark course when Mackie is captured again and sentenced to death. But surprisingly, he is excused by police chief Brown and raised to the nobility.

a play with tradition

premiered the "Dreigroschenoper" on August 31, 1928 in the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin and has since developed into a classic. Brecht's staging, which shows criminals, beggars and directors, breaks with the then common patterns in the theater and focuses on social grievances. The piece addresses the misery and the despair of people at a time when poverty was widespread and numerous former soldiers lived on the street.

The best -known song of the performance, "The Morite of Mackie Messer", is now a worldwide hit and was covered by numerous artists, including Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. Director Holger Mahlich attaches particular importance to the vocal skills of the actors, while a seven -member stage orchestra with 15 instruments ensures the background music. The line -up for the Wismar performance is prominent and includes Manon Strachè as Mrs. Peachum and Jens Wawrczeck as Mr. Peachum.
