The writer Eberhard Hilscher, born on April 28, 1927 in Schwiebus (today Świebodzin, Poland), left a lasting impression on German literature with his stories. Until his death on December 7, 2005 in Berlin, Hilscher was a much-admired writer and literary scholar who spent his main creative years in the GDR. With a trained eye for the nuances of life, he created a multi-layered collection of essays, novels and biographies in which he illuminated important figures such as Gerhart Hauptmann and Thomas Mann, among others. Now, in 2025, his latest collection “Rendezvous of Dreamers, Fools and Lovers” will be published, which includes 15 short stories. This collection promises to immerse readers in the cheerful and thoughtful world of Hilscher's literary work. Literary criticism reports that most of the texts in the volume radiate a cheerful or relaxed mood.

A special highlight among these stories is “Hottibaal's Immortalization,” which was written to mark the 40th anniversary of the GDR but was never published. The work reflects Hilscher's critical view of the political realities of his time. With stories like “One Day – One Life,” Hilscher shows how a married couple, during their fantastic journey, comes to discoveries about idleness and the desire for love. In “Trunkener Schmock” we experience the amusing and chaotic moments of a German studies congress, where witty presentations and alcohol-fuelled outbursts of anger balance each other out. The story “Passage, Zafra and Courage” is set in Cuba and not only addresses the reality there, but also offers parodies of socialist realism.

Diverse topics and deep discussions

The story “Poet in the Sight” is considered the most profound of the volume and offers a fascinating discussion between two poets about censorship and creative ideals. This debate is still relevant today because it reflects the cultural development in Germany over the last 70 years. In the context of these stories it becomes clear that Hilscher not only tells stories, but also draws a line on current issues. Furthermore, the arrangement that gives the female character the first and last word in the Cuba story increases the fun of reading and arouses the interest of the listener.

A notable aspect of Hilscher's work is the fact that his works have been published not only in German, but also in many other languages ​​such as Russian, Hungarian, Japanese and Polish. His commitment to literature is recognized not only by the awarding of the Schiller Honorary Gift in Weimar and a scholarship from the Prussian Sea Dealing Foundation, but also by his honorary citizenship of Świebodzin. In 2000 he was buried there in an honorary grave.

A legacy of literary depth

Hilscher's work extends across various literary forms; from his first novella “Tierra del Fuego ahoy!” 1961 up to his last unfinished works. In 2023, a selection of poetry from his estate was published in the Poetry Album series and in 2017 an uncensored “final edition” of his “World Clock” was published. His ceaseless search for literary expression and reflection on his own history make him one of the most important authors of his time. It will now be particularly interesting to see how the public reacts to the new, unpublished stories, which offer him another stage for his thoughts and feelings.
