New Peene Bridge in Wolgast: 421 million euros for less traffic jams!
A lot is happening in Northern Germany! A significant improvement in the transport infrastructure is imminent: the new construction of the Peene Bridge in Wolgast has finally been secured. With comprehensive funding of €421 million provided by the Federal Government, this project is considered one of the most important investments in local infrastructure. As Global Highways reports, the new bridge will not only improve transportation routes, but also significantly reduce frequent traffic delays.
The current situation is anything but optimal. The existing Bascule Bridge, which ensures road and rail connections to the popular island of Usedom, cannot cope with the current traffic flow. This always leads to traffic jams and waiting times. Consequently, the new construction of the Peene Bridge is part of an extensive bypass project that covers the city of Wolgast by 6.8 kilometers and is estimated to cost a total of 500 million euros.
A modern solution for the region
The contract for the construction of the Peene Bridge went to the renowned bidding consortium led by the Swiss company Implenia Civil Engineering. What is particularly pleasing is that the new bridge is being designed as a bridle bridge. This will be 1.4 kilometers long and have an eight-meter-wide, two-lane road, which should ensure smooth traffic. With a clearance height of 42 meters and 70 meter high support pillars, the new bridge will also ensure that the old bridge will no longer need to be lifted - great news for shipping traffic on the Peenestrom!
Minister of Economics and Transport Dr. Wolfgang Blank described the decision as a “milestone for the transport infrastructure”. The construction project is seen as essential for connecting the island of Usedom to the entire region, as Nordkurier highlights. The new route will now take B111 traffic southeast past the town of Wolgast and further optimize the connection to the A20.
Background and modernization
It is well known about the condition of bridges in Germany that many of these structures date from the 1960s to 1980s and can therefore no longer meet modern requirements. A total of around 40,300 bridges in Germany, many of them as part of an extensive modernization program, are waiting for necessary maintenance measures, as can be found on BMV. The federal government's aim is to adapt these bridges to the increased requirements for load-bearing capacity, traffic safety and durability.
The new construction of the Peene Bridge in Wolgast will not only significantly improve the transport infrastructure in the region. Access for heavy traffic will also be optimized and safety will be increased for all road users. Life in and around Wolgast is becoming noticeably easier - a development that many long for.
