Attention, students! Germany ticket invalid during the summer holidays!
The summer holidays in Lower Saxony are just around the corner and many students in Braunschweig are already planning their next excursions and vacations. An important detail: The Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket) cannot be used during the holiday season. This regulation not only affects the people of Braunschweig, but applies nationwide. During inspections between July 1st and 2nd, the ticket will show the note “invalid”, which may surprise some students. This lockdown will come into effect on the last two days of school and is certainly important information for anyone looking forward to the upcoming holidays. News38 reports.
For many students who rely on the Deutschlandticket, this means that they have to resort to alternative offers during the summer holidays. Fortunately, there is the option to purchase a U21 leisure card or the U21 summer vacation card for Lower Saxony. This card costs 23.70 euros and includes the use of all means of transport within the Braunschweig Region Transport Association (VRB) for the entire period of six weeks. A good deal considering the ticket also comes with restrictions!
Rules and current information
What is the validity of the Germany ticket after the summer holidays? From the 2024/2025 school year, eligible students will receive the collective student season tickets (SSZK) as a Germany ticket in the form of a chip card. This agreement covers several cities, including Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Wolfsburg, as well as the districts of Gifhorn, Goslar, Helmstedt, Peine and Wolfenbüttel. The ticket is valid nationwide on local public transport and can be used around the clock - but not during the summer holidays. VRB Online presents the details.
Special regulations also apply for the previous month of July: On the first two days, for technical reasons, the ticket can only be used in the VRB area; excursions beyond the borders are not possible on these days. This is particularly important for students who may have plans to travel beyond the VRB area.

But what happens if you have a regular Germany ticket? In general, the Deutschlandticket costs 58 euros per month and can be canceled monthly. It is personal and non-transferable, so minors can only purchase this ticket with parental consent. It opens up the possibility of traveling on local transport from S-Bahn to trams and buses, but not on long-distance transport (e.g. ICE, IC/EC). Therefore, the chip card, which many students now have to keep carefully during the holidays, remains important even after the holidays. Lower Saxony tariff informed.
So – students in Braunschweig should prepare well for the fact that their Germany ticket is not valid during the summer holidays and look for alternatives in good time. After all, the most wonderful time of the year should be enjoyed carefree!
