New price increases in Lyon's swimming pools: what kind of families?

Celle, Deutschland - in Lyon it is hot: from June 6, 2025, swimming fans have to dig deep into their pockets, because the city increases the admission prices for the urban swimming pools. This decision was made on May 15, 2025 in the city council, and although the "Pour Lyon" group and the "Droite, Center et Indépendants" loudly resisted, the majority did not let itself be replaced by the price adjustments. The new tariffs confront the bathers with an increase from 18 % to 4 euros for a single ticket, before that it was 3.40 euros, and for a 10 card the new price is 32 euros-that's around 28 % more. This information comes directly from Le Tout Lyon .

But why this increase? One reason is the massive cuts of government positions under Bayrou, which severely restrict the financial scope of the municipalities. Another point of view is the high investment requirement for the necessary renovations of the swimming pools, which are particularly urged at a time increasing costs for maintenance and operation. In addition, access to swimming pools for public health is of considerable importance, as well as the advantages of swimming - from muscle strength to reduce stress and social interaction. With this measure, the city of Lyon is pursuing the goal of countering the Influx increase and modernizing the infrastructure of the swimming pools. This is supported, among other things, by investing 1.5 million euros for the Garibaldi swimming pool and 6.9 million euros for the Vaise swimming pool, such as reported.

reactions of the population

The reactions to the price increases are mixed. Many show concern about access to the baths for low -income families who could be deterred by the price increase. However, there is approval for the necessary renovations and the modern design of the swimming pools. Some citizens propose staggered tariffs to enable families better participation.

Julie Nublat-Faure from the city council group "Droite, Center et Indépendants" defended the increased prices, but at the same time explained that Lyon continues to have the lowest tariffs in the metropolitan region compared to other cities, with the new entrance fee below the average of 4.29 euros. In Paris, for example, you pay 5.50 euros for a single ticket. This shows that Lyon remains comparatively cheap despite the increase. But even if the increase of 2.60 euros for reduced tariffs for pupils and students remains unchanged, the benefits of these facilities are not undisputed for the general public and the community. Many citizens are concerned about the future availability of public baths, especially if you look at the development of other cities where baths had to close. An investigation by the KfW shows that the maintenance of municipal swimming pools is difficult due to lack of personnel and high energy costs and many swimming pools are closed every year.

The future of the baths

Current estimates indicate that around 80 swimming pools in Germany conclude due to financial misery and lack of staff. This shows a nationwide problem that Lyon does not take from the challenges of the "swimming pool death". The social and health consequences of such a decline would be fatal: swimming pools are not only leisure sites, but also important places of recovery and community. Appeal to the city, the quality of the infrastructure and the accessibility for everyone remains an absolute need to ensure the positive aspects of swimming in the long term - a challenge that Lyon has to face with these price adjustments, as well as fr.de reported.
