50-year-old arrested after school break-in in Derendingen!

An unexpected incident occurred in Derendingen on the quiet night from Thursday to Friday. A 50-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of the morning after breaking into a school on Primus-Truber-Straße. The building's burglar alarm was activated around 3:20 a.m., which quickly brought police to the scene. The emergency services on site behaved professionally and surrounded the building while the suspect was arrested without resistance Tixio reported.

When he broke into the school, the man broke into a vending machine. This led to a criminal complaint for particularly serious theft, which the public prosecutor will now decide on. The investigation continues to clarify the exact circumstances of the break-in. At a time when burglaries are on the rise in Germany, this incident is not necessarily surprising.

Burglary numbers are increasing

A recently published report from 2024 shows that burglary numbers in Germany are experiencing a worrying increase. In 2023, for example, 77,819 residential burglaries were registered nationwide, which corresponds to an increase of around 18 percent compared to the previous year. On average, there are 213 burglaries per day, with the average damage per burglary being around 3,500 euros. The total damage caused by burglaries amounted to a massive 340 million euros in 2023, according to the Home Insider Statistics make it clear.

What is particularly striking is that the increasing trends can be observed after the corona pandemic. The numbers are also higher in large cities than in rural areas. Burglaries usually occur in the form of occasional and spontaneous acts, which account for 80 percent of all burglaries. Even though 47 percent of burglary attempts are unsuccessful, the number of unreported cases is worrying.

More incidents that same morning

The night wasn't just a turbulent time for the 50-year-old burglar. At around 7:50 a.m., an eleven-year-old boy was seriously injured when he fell off his bike without a helmet on Goldgasse in Ofterdingen. He was on his way to school. He was immediately taken to hospital in an ambulance.

At the same time, a traffic accident occurred on the L 385 between Talheim and Mössingen, in which a 19-year-old drove off the road due to distraction and crashed into a tree. Fortunately, he only suffered minor injuries. The vehicle, however, suffered a total economic loss of around 8,000 euros and had to be towed away, while the young man was also taken to hospital.

The events of that night are another reason why security issues are increasingly coming to the fore. With more efficient measures and security advice from the police, many break-ins can potentially be prevented. It remains to be hoped that the community in Derendingen will band together more closely to prevent such incidents in the future.
