Delmenhorst: Banks remain stable in the branch of the region!

Delmenhorst, Deutschland - The branch death at banks and savings banks in Germany is in full swing, but Delmenhorst is spared from this development for the time being. As the Weser-Kurier are alarming: In 2022 the number of banking decreases and Sparkasse branches around 1,631 locations to a total of 17,870. This trend has reinforced over the past few years due to a continued change to online banking and the associated cost pressure.

In Delmenhorst, Volksbank Oldenburg-Land/Delmenhorst and the Landesparkasse zu Oldenburg (LZO) are at the forefront. The latter has five branches in the city and, as Julia Timling reports, is not planning to reduce the branch network. On the contrary: the LZO continues to invest in its locations, recently renovated the branch on Oldenburger Straße and soon moves into a new building on Stedinger Strasse. Katja von Elbwart from the Volksbank on site also makes it clear that the bank does not intend to compil and thus keep the personal contact point in the region.

Overview of the decline in the branches

  • 2021: Around 10% of the branches closed
  • 2022: decline by about 6%

It is striking that the large banks in particular are severely affected. According to an analysis, a decline in 1,287 branches was recorded at the large banks, while the savings banks, which are still at the top with 6,926 locations, lost 178 branches. Cooperative banks, which also include the Volks- und Raiffeisen banks, reduced their network by 186 branches.

The future of bank branches

The banking landscape in Germany is expected to continue to change. Experts expect that the declining development of the branches will continue, especially since 1,403 money houses existed in 2023 - a decline of 55 compared to the previous year. In view of these figures, it is clear that the banks have to find new ways to maintain customer loyalty. Measures such as video advice, advisory center with extended opening times or even mobile Sparkassen buses could be the answer to the changed needs of customers.

Whether Delmenhorst is still spared from this development will be shown. It is certain that personal contact with the customers will continue to play an important role in the future, while the industry is at the same time reoriented and digitally.
