Be careful, fog in Emden! Visibility obstructions up to less than 150 meters!

Today, July 19, 2025, it is uncomfortably foggy in Emden in Lower Saxony. An official weather warning for the region was issued by the German Weather Service (DWD) early in the morning and is valid from 3:34 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. During this time, heavy fog is to be expected, which will reduce visibility to less than 150 meters and therefore pose an increased risk for road users. The warning level has been rated yellow, meaning caution is advised. The DWD recommends adapting your driving behavior accordingly, as sudden visual impairments can occur.

The current weather in Emden, however, initially appears to be friendly. At 3 a.m. a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius was measured with clear air and a remarkably high humidity of 98 percent. The wind blows at 10 km/h and brings no precipitation. However, these weather conditions should change during the day, as by around 8:00 a.m. the temperature will rise to 18 degrees and the wind will increase to up to 11 km/h.

After the fog comes the sun

However, the fog will ultimately give way to the sun. From 9:00 a.m. the temperature is expected to be 21 degrees Celsius, rising to 27 degrees every hour. A pleasant summer day is in store for us! The hourly weather data shows that the 25 degree mark is already exceeded around midday, and the wind conditions are also enjoying a slight increase.

But the weather situation is not just limited to visibility restrictions. In Lower Saxony, the weather is also important for agriculture, especially when it comes to heat stress in poultry. The Agricultural Meteorology Department informs that the enthalpy of the air is crucial for the well-being of animals. Under optimal conditions, the total heat content of the air should be kept low so as not to exceed critical values in the stables. The hot days from May to September are particularly important here, when agricultural weather data is updated daily.

A look at agriculture

Farmers should also pay attention to relevant information about ground frost. Maps show whether the ground in the top layers is frost-free or whether frost is expected. This information is particularly important for plant protection measures that have to be carried out at certain temperatures and weather conditions.

The combination of fog warnings and the opportunities in agriculture shows how dynamic the weather situation is in our regions. It remains to be hoped that, despite the early hours of fog, the sun will soon shine over Emden and people will be able to enjoy the day to the fullest.
