Armin Mueller-Stahl: Back to the art world at the age of 95!

A name that is inextricably linked in the world of film and art: Armin Mueller-Stahl. The versatile artist, born in Tilsit in 1930, celebrates his 95th birthday in December. In honor of this special occasion, the Kunsthalle Emden has opened the exhibition “Day and Night on Earth”, which can be seen from November 15, 2025 to April 12, 2026. [NDR].

Mueller-Stahl grew up in a musical family where drawing, painting and making music were part of everyday life. He began drawing at the tender age of three and showed his talent early on by sketching his fellow actors in the theater. In his studio he processes his biography and world events every day, sees parallels between painting and acting - capturing essential moments with just a few brush strokes. Biography of an artist

Over the years, Mueller-Stahl has caused a sensation not only in Germany but also internationally. Countless films, over 140 in number, shape his career, which began in the GDR and ultimately brought him to Hollywood. Despite the success, he also experienced tragic turns. Much of his work was lost in a fire at his villa in Los Angeles. But the artist never gave up and continues to paint in Germany. Wikipedia

The current works that can be admired in the Kunsthalle Emden show, among other things, portraits of prominent personalities such as Susan Sontag and Harry Belafonte, who are often presented with distorted facial features. This type of portrayal reflects his unique perspective on the world - powerful and penetrating. The themes of his paintings are not only personal experiences, but also political social events, such as the chaos under Donald Trump.

A small look at the exhibition

The exhibition is led by Dr. Antje-Britt Mählmann, who is working on this project together with the Kunsthalle Emden, the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation and the Opelvillen Rüsselsheim Art and Culture Foundation. A catalog for the exhibition has also been published and contains numerous color illustrations and exciting texts. It is available at the museum box office for 28 euros.

Looking to the future, Mueller-Stahl hopes to live to see the end of the Ukraine war and plans to celebrate his 95th birthday in a small circle with his wife. His passion for art remains unbroken and his works will continue to remain in people's hearts. The opening hours of the Kunsthalle Emden are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the house is closed on Mondays.
