Eduard Dinkela, city spokesman, described the situation as a “technical challenge” that still needs to be examined in more detail.

For boaters heading towards Ratsdelft or Kesselschleuse, it is currently time to reschedule. They have to avoid the Borssum lock, which could mess up one plan or another. Recently there were similar problems on the bascule bridge in Uphusen, where a technical defect prevented it from being raised. But the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) was able to quickly remedy the situation there too, while the excursion ship MS Aurich had to make a forced stop in Emden due to the bridge problem.

Renovations and new replacement buildings

The bridge on the Roten Siel is not just a simple structure, but an important engineering structure that secures an important transport connection between two parts of the city. The Ems-Jade Canal, over which the bridge leads, connects the Ems in Emden with the Jade Bay near Wilhelmshaven and is often used by city traffic. These components are crucial to the operation and functionality of the bridge and could be part of the current problem.

All that remains for citizens and travelers is to wait and see when the important transport connection will be operational again.
