Dragon boat action in Emden: ELG Dragons celebrate a strong victory!

The dragon boat regatta in Emden was once again an event that captivated the spectators this year. The event took place on June 29, 2025 as part of the Emder Hafenmeile, the largest sporting event on the water in northwest Germany. With 36 teams taking part, including the Emder Laufgemeinschaft (ELG) for the first time, the regatta was a complete success. The ELG Dragons were able to score a victory at their premiere in the fun class.

The exciting finale of the premier class, in which ten bank boats competed, became the centerpiece of the day. The Sporting Dragons secured the title back, which they previously had to hand over to ERV Deichdynamics. With a time of 1:06.18 minutes, the team finished just ahead of ERV Deichdynamics, which came in second with 1:06.50 minutes. The EKC Seeteufel rounded off the podium with a time of 1:07.42 minutes.

High audience numbers and a strong supporting program

The number of spectators exceeded those of the previous year, and the positive feedback from organizers shows that enthusiasm for the dragon boat race continues to grow. Live drone images, moderated by Keno Bergholz and Tamme Nau Schütt, contributed to the special atmosphere of the event. There was also a lot of competition for prizes in the side competitions: the award for the furthest journey went to a team from Poznań, while the Minions from Vigesco presented the best costume.

The awards for outstanding performance were also presented: “Drum Doc” from the Krankenhuus Draken was the best drummer and the battle cry award went to BBS II. The company race was won by Fopac Dragons in the five bank category, while Sparkasse Emden was successful in the ten bank category. The Likedeelers celebrated a remarkable comeback in the sports class, while the vocational schools II took third place in this category.

Interesting duels such as the port duel and school duels are already being announced in the schedule. The finals are scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. and a paddling party with DJ starting at 5:30 p.m. The organizers are the Emden Rowing Club, the city of Emden and the Sparkasse Emden, who are keeping the anticipation for the event high.

The German Dragon Boat Sports Association (DDV) has already begun long-term preparation for the 2025 World Championships for dragon boat athletes. This is aimed at participants of all ages and takes place with both standard and small boats. Interested athletes can apply until November 30, 2024 to become part of this preparation. In this way, the passion for dragon boating in Emden is further strengthened and carried into the world.
