Large-scale exercise in Emden: 100 forces test disaster protection at a biogas plant!
An impressive disaster control exercise was recently carried out in Emden-Wybelsum, in which around 100 emergency services demonstrated their skills. Organized by Stefan Sweers, a local biogas plant operator, this exercise served as important preparation for an emergency. Around 15 vehicles were used, including a fire truck from Wiesmoor, to run through various scenarios.
The aim of this exercise was to prepare emergency services for potential disasters. This included road closures, rescue from traffic accidents and a fire in a biogas plant. “It is the first time that we are playing out this specific scenario for the Emden local fire brigade,” explains Sweers. Such exercises are essential to be prepared for emergencies and to optimize processes.
Preparing for the unexpected
A central organization is particularly important in larger damage situations. Disaster protection in Emden is the responsibility of the city, which is based on the Lower Saxony Disaster Protection Act. This law ensures that there is a clear action plan for every disaster that brings together both the strategic and logistical organization. In Emden, a specially set up disaster control team ensures that all relevant information is brought to the table quickly.
The exercise in Wybelsum was not just a simulation. She also embodied the emergency in which life, health and the environment are at risk. The aim is that in the event of a disaster, all emergency services, be it the volunteer fire department, the technical relief agency or the German Red Cross, can act quickly and efficiently. External emergency plans for hazardous companies are also taken into account.
The backbone of disaster control
The disaster protection funds in Lower Saxony include more than 130,000 volunteer fire departments who are available at various locations in the state. A large number of aid organizations are deployed in Emden, including the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund and the Malteser. Everyone does their part to be prepared for possible disasters.
In order to protect citizens as best as possible, exercises like those in Wybelsum are organized regularly. “The better we are prepared for such scenarios, the less danger there is in an emergency,” is the tenor of those responsible in the city of Emden. Citizens can therefore rest easy, knowing that well-trained staff will be available in the event of an emergency.
