New bus system in Emden: More flexibility, less waiting times!
In January 2023, the city of Emden took a completely new course in public transport. The change from the confusing 16-line system to a clearer concept with only three main lines has caused lively discussions. The supply gaps and confusing changes were initially not without criticism. But as nwzonline.de reports, the new system has now proven itself in practice.
The new lines 1, 2 and 3 cover the essential connections in the city and now even offer a 15-minute service in the city center. This means that passengers can organize their journeys more flexibly and waiting times have been noticeably reduced. “This is a step in the right direction,” says Olaf Schmidt, the boss of Emder Stadtverkehr GmbH, about the consistently positive response to the innovations.
School buses and flexible connections
There were initially some concerns, especially at schools, about the tight departure times, which upset many parents and teachers. According to stadtverkehr-emden.de, adjustments were quickly made to offer students more driving options. At the Steinweg school center and at the Max-Gymnasium there are sufficient buses available for students after lessons.
In the outskirts of Emden, the shared call taxi, also known as the Emden Shuttle, provides additional flexibility. This offer is particularly efficient outside of peak times and areas, ensuring that all areas of the city are well connected and thus counteracts the previous criticisms.
Passenger numbers and ticket usage
The number of passengers since the implementation of the new system has not yet been recorded in concrete figures, but a trend is assumed that should at least maintain the level of the previous year. The upward movement is, among other things, favored by the increasing use of the Deutschlandticket, which, according to vdv.de, plays a key role in winning back passengers and increasing capacity on city buses.
Despite all the positive developments, transport companies in Germany are facing major challenges. Local public transport (ÖPNV) has suffered in recent years from the corona pandemic, the energy crisis and inflation. But innovative mobility concepts and investments in infrastructure should set the course for sustainable development in the long term.
In summary, it can be said that the new Emden city transport has taken a significant step towards a flexible and customer-friendly future. The ongoing adjustments and optimizations show that we are working with a good hand in order to meet the needs of the citizens.
