Schöningen celebrates a historic 2-1 win against Kickers Emden – first regional league points!
In an exciting encounter on August 27, 2025, Kickers Emden suffered a bitter 1:2 defeat against FSV Schöningen. In front of 1,950 spectators in the Ostfriesland Stadium, the hosts initially took the lead in the first half, but were unable to save it over time. With this win, Schöningen not only celebrated their first three-pointer of the season, but also the first in the entire history of the regional league, after previously suffering five defeats in a row.
The game started promisingly for the Kickers: Nick Stepantsev took advantage of a precise cross from Tobias Steffen and put his team in the lead with a header in the 23rd minute. The joy didn't last long, however. Just 19 minutes later, Daniel Reiche equalized for the guests with a header from a free kick. Despite several half-chances, Emden was unable to improve after the break. Steffens missed the best opportunity, whose lob only hit the outside post.
Tension until the last minute
As the playing time increased, Schöningen became bolder and pushed for the decision. The big moment for the guests came in the fourth minute of stoppage time: Tom Luca Winter benefited from a mistake in the Emden defense and scored the decisive 1:2, which brought relief and celebration to the FSV.
Kickers coach Stefan Emmerling expressed disappointment with his team's performance and called for a significant improvement before the next game against Phönix Lübeck on Saturday at 6 p.m. He stressed that the team needs to develop more focus and determination to be successful.
Outlook for the upcoming games
The Kickers Emden, one of the favorites for promotion, now have to work on themselves to learn from this unexpected defeat. Schöningen, on the other hand, can go into the next games with new self-confidence. Next weekend, FSV will face VfB Oldenburg and will want to take the momentum from this historic first regional league victory with them.
Overall, it can be said that football in northern Germany is always good for surprises. Anyone who was a spectator in the stadium was at least able to watch an exciting duel in which nerves were tense until the last minute.
