Drugs at the wheel: Two drivers in Gifhorn caught on controls!
In the past few days, traffic controls in the Gifhorn area have caused a sensation. On July 15, 2025, the authorities carried out two checks: first in the Herzog-Ernst-August-Straße in Gifhorn and later on the main street in Calberlah. The aim of these controls was to increase traffic safety and to raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs. As reported regionalheute.de, two drivers were caught on the measures that were positively tested for drugs.
The first driver, a 34-year-old Maserati-Lenker, admitted to consuming narcotics after his quick test. Immediately after this confession, he was prohibited from continuing and a blood sample was removed. The second driver, a 37-year-old man in a Volkswagen Polo, also received the same treatment. The quick test was also positive for him. Against both men were initiated by administrative offenses.
positive tests for further controls
These controls are not just a unique event. Already between the 6th and 8th September 2024, more than 40 vehicles were checked in the Gifhorn district, especially in Brome and Gifhorn. In this campaign, five drivers were found under the influence of drugs, and two of them had no valid driving license. The police carried out several blood samples and initiated corresponding procedures to promote security on the streets, reports [die-nachrichten.net] (https://die-nachrichten.net/blaulicht/verkehrskrellen-im-landkreis-gifhorn- Mehrer-fahrten-unter-drogen/).
A incident was particularly alarming on Saturday evening: a 40-year-old driver from Gifhorn was stopped under drug influence without a driving license, and a motorcyclist was stopped in the blood with 1.95 per thousand. Here are the potential dangers that come from drugs and alcohol in road traffic.
a terrifying overview
A current dark field study by the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV) shows that in 2023 around 250,000 people in Austria steered a vehicle with drugs in the blood. This is in a strong contrast to the only 8,676 advertisements due to drug drivers, which corresponds to about 3 % of the estimated cases. Here it becomes clear that a large part of the affected handlebars remains undetected. KFV speaks of an urgent need for action to improve the drug detection in road traffic.
With these findings it becomes clear that the efforts to ensure more road traffic are essential. Checks like those in Gifhorn are a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen how effective they will be in the long run.
