Squirrels and sleeping mice: harmony in our mixed forests!

A new study by the University of Göttingen brings a breath of fresh air to natural research and gives exciting insights into the coexistence of squirrels and sleeping mice. In a seven -month project, the researchers examined the tree tops of North German forests with the latest technology. 80 cameras were installed at heights between two and 30 meters, which registered 468 sightings of squirrels and 446 sightings of sleeping mice, such as idw reported. The results show that mixed forests from leaf and conifers favor the living conditions for both animal species.

The role of the squirrels in the forest

Not only your coexistence causes a stir. Squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) play a crucial role in the forest ecosystem. They are true “forest workers” who actively help the spread of trees. In autumn, the clever climbers collect nuts, seeds and fruits as a winter supply and hide them in protected locations. Many of these storage spots are used to germinate new trees, especially for hazels and books. This is done as part of a symbiotic relationship between squirrel and trees, such as Staufenwald described in detail.

The food intake of the squirrels is versatile and varies depending on the season. Your favorites are nuts, seeds of seed -bearing trees, as well as a variety of berries and mushrooms. In summer even insects and bird eggs are eaten. Wherever there is something to nibble, the lively animals can be found!

A look into the future

The multitude of finds from the study underlines the importance of the mixed forest to preserve biodiversity. Since the variety of types increases in the forests, survival is secured by both the squirrels and the sleeping mice. This in turn has a positive impact on the stability of the forests, which ultimately also benefits climate protection. Because squirrels contribute to the genetic mixing of the tree species through their activities and support the natural afforestation, especially according to disorders such as storms or fires.
