100 years of fencing story: Jubilee of the TC Hameln is celebrated big!
Hameln, Deutschland - A very special anniversary is just around the corner: The fencing department of the TC Hameln celebrates its 100th anniversary! On Saturday, June 22, 2025 , the West sports hall is really to the point at 10 a.m. Anyone who knows the history of TC Hameln knows that this was founded in 1880 as a "gymnastics club of young merchants" and that fencing has taken up a special place since 1925. Founding father of the fencing department is the unforgettable Arthur Baecher, who opened the gates into a real success story.
The long tradition of the fencing department was by no means temporary. After the Second World War, Johannes Kaßner took over the management until 1958, followed by Isengard Franke, who worked tirelessly for over 56 years and led the department to a new era. Her remarkable career ended with her death in 2022 at the age of 96. Under Frankes instructions, Christoph Hansen won the first German championship title for the department in 1969 and many other successes should follow, including many German championship titles - especially in the Friesenk Steam.
success and honors
Over the decades, TC Hameln has not only gained national but also international recognition. In 2001 Franke won a bronze medal at the Seniors' European Championships in Degen. The orientation of the 7-nation tournament in the men's floret on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the city was an outstanding event. This shows how much the TC Hameln lives and breathes!
The training under the direction of coach Axel Klages is currently organized. Here all age groups are offered the opportunity to improve their skills on the fencing device twice a week. Young fencers from Hameln keep getting top positions in Lower Saxony and even fighting for the medals at German championships.
The heir Isengard Frankes
Isengard Franke remains a face that is inseparable from the fencing department of the TC Hameln. In March of this year she celebrated her 85th birthday and still enjoys a very special status in the fencing community. Her commitment to the youngsters is remarkable and is recognized by the young talents like 15-year-old Luis Kirschling. "She is a role model and brings everyone a smile in the face," says Kirschling about the trainer, who is always the first to appear in the fencing hall.
The appreciation for Frankes work is great. Parents, such as Volker Friedrichs, see them as a "veteran" in fencing sports and for TC Hameln, while the board of the Lower Saxony Fencing Association congratulated them for their decades of passion and dedication.
The history of fencing itself is also extremely fascinating. Did you know that fencing is one of humanity's oldest competitions? Originally an armed fight, it has developed over the centuries and has been one of the Olympic Games since 1896. This is only a small part of the long tradition that shapes fencing - in this country with the first fencing club in Hanover, which was launched in 1862.
The 100th anniversary of the fencing department of the TC Hameln is more than just a reason to celebrate. It is a tribute to the hard work, the dedication and passion that this sport has embodied over the decades. Together, the fencing community will appreciate the story experienced on this special day and look into the future with confidence. An occasion that brings many people together and sparked the love of fencing again!
