Hannover 96 turns the game around and remains unbeaten – Kiel has no chance!

In a thrilling northern duel, Hannover 96 defeated Holstein Kiel 2-1 on August 30, 2025 and thus remains undefeated at the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. With this victory, Hannover have achieved four wins in four competitive games and can look forward to an impeccable record. While Kiel took the lead at the start of the game through Phil Harres in the 21st minute, Hannover showed impressive morale by turning the deficit around.

The game began with a cry for help from Kiel, as the hosts prevailed early on. Phil Harres scored his first second division goal after a cross from John Tolkin. However, Hannover seemed unimpressed and pushed for an equalizer. Before halftime, Lower Saxony had several good chances, including a shot from Maurice Neubauer that hit the crossbar and a great reflex from Kiel keeper Jannik Rochelt (41st minute). Despite the deficit, Hannover remained in control.

Lower Saxony is catching up

In the second half, the Hanoverians turned up the heat and showed that they can fight for every point. In the 62nd minute it was Virgil Ghita who headed in after a corner from Enzo Leopold and equalized. This goal brought a breath of fresh air and a wave of relief among the fans who had traveled with them.

Kiel can't keep up

Despite a solid defensive performance, Holstein Kiel hardly shone in attack and exposed weaknesses in their offense. In the second half they were unable to withstand the pressure that Hannover exerted and rarely made any significant offensive moves. Kiel's keeper Jonas Krumrey had some good saves, but ultimately couldn't prevent the defeat.

With this victory, Hannover 96 sent a clear signal in the league. After four games they sit at the top of the table with 12 points and are currently enjoying excellent form. The next challenges are already coming: Kiel will face Schalke on September 13th, while Hannover will play at home against Hertha BSC. It remains to be seen whether Hannover can continue to extend their winning streak.
