Lüneburg's winter magic begins: looking forward to Christmas from October 24th!
When the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, a special event is just around the corner: the magic of winter in Lüneburg. On October 24, 2025, two months before Christmas Eve, the city will open its doors to its pre-Christmas fun. The event takes place on the grounds of the Hotel “Bergström” near the picturesque Stint. Even if the event cannot officially be called a “Christmas market” – after all, it opens in October – the winter magic promises a lot of joy for young and old.
Visitors can look forward to five snack stands that offer all sorts of delicacies. From hearty bratwursts to sweet crepes to warming mulled wine, there is something for every taste. Visual highlights include the small train that runs over the roofs of the stands, as well as the colorfully illuminated bridge and the fairytale tunnel, which immerse visitors in a magical world. Decorative reindeer also create a festive atmosphere.
The start of the Christmas season
With the magic of winter begins the anticipation of the festive season, which will really gain momentum in Lüneburg on November 26, 2025 with the opening of the large Christmas markets. From then on the city becomes a “Christmas town” where lights shine over the gables and Christmas trees and the wonderful smells of mulled wine and roasted almonds waft through the streets. The “Lüneburg shines” campaign will then bathe the town hall, the shower bridge and several churches in a festive light.
The Christmas markets in Lüneburg are known for their diversity and invite you to linger. A real highlight is the Christmas market at the town hall, where a carousel invites children to spin and concerts take place on Advent Sundays. Likewise, the “Christmas on the Sande” market, which promises a festive atmosphere and delicious roasted almonds. For all history lovers there is the historic Christmas market, which is dedicated to the Renaissance on December 7th and 8th. Culinary delights and festively illuminated attractions such as the Mälzer Mühle await guests at Stint.
Special experiences during Advent
If you are looking for additional attractions, you should not miss the Lüneburg Fairytale Mile with its twelve huts. Here, moving figures tell stories in High German or Low German, while the play “The Insanely Intelligent Irrmgard” in the town hall delights young and old alike. Santa Claus will also hand out surprises at the Christmas market at the town hall and make faces smile.
The gift packing station in the IHK building, which is open from November 27th to December 23rd, ensures stress-free gift planning. In addition, on Advent Saturdays there is a barrier-free Advent shuttle that runs from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Another nice detail: The Lüneburg Christmas cup 2024, with a design by Linda Paletta, is a popular collector's item and shows how lively the city's traditions are maintained. An art competition for the design of the 2025/2026 Christmas cup is already being planned.
Amid all these festive possibilities, Lüneburg creates an atmosphere full of magic and anticipation during Advent. From hearty cuisine to contemplative lighting, the city has its magic for everyone.
