Competition Our village has a future: 14 villages in the evaluation focus!

The competition starts next Tuesday, June 18, 2025 “Our village has a future". As the Uelzen press reported, the villages will be visited by the Lüneburg Office for Regional Development (ArL) as part of a regional preliminary decision. 14 villages from the districts of Uelzen, Harburg, Cuxhaven, Rotenburg/Wümme, Osterholz, Verden, Oldenburg and Wesermarsch have qualified for this competition. The jury will select five villages from these villages, which will then be allowed to compete in the state competition.

The competition aims to promote the sustainable development of rural areas and recognize civic engagement. The criteria for the trips include not only the attractiveness of the villages and the quality of life, but also the commitment of the villagers to the development of their village. Over three days, from June 23rd to 25th, other villages in the above-mentioned districts will be visited before the final event takes place in Kirchboitzen on July 10th. This is particularly notable as Kirchboitzen is the current 2023 federal gold winning village.

A competition with tradition

The “Our Village has a Future” competition has existed since 1961 and is organized under the patronage of the Federal President Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) explained. The participants from the old and new federal states are evaluated together. An important goal is to make the positive development in rural regions visible and to promote voluntary work.

The coming year is the 28th nationwide competition. The state winners will take part in the federal competition in 2026. The competition is carried out in collaboration with numerous ministries and associations and is part of the federal program for rural development and regional value creation. This makes it clear how much potential there is in the villages and how diverse the challenges and solutions can be.

Funding for rural areas

Another aspect that is important for the villages is financial support. According to the Government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Around 40 million euros in funding are provided annually in EU structural funding to improve the quality of life in rural communities. The support aims to strengthen both basic services and tourism opportunities and to advance the development of sustainable infrastructure.

The challenges are great, especially in regions with low population densities. The aim here is to secure basic local services and thus create an attractive living environment. These measures can make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life and thus keep rural areas vibrant. It is all the more important that the villages take the opportunity to take part in the competition and present their achievements.
