Snow chaos in Bremen: 55 accidents due to slippery conditions, A1 closed for hours!

The wintry road conditions have caused significant traffic disruptions in northern Germany over the last few nights. The A1 motorway was particularly badly affected, where an accident late in the evening resulted in it being closed for several hours. A truck lost control around midnight near Groß-Ippener, crashed into the guard rails and turned sideways. To make it easier for travelers: The road has now been reopened, reports buten and within.

The authorities recorded 55 minor slippery accidents around Oldenburg. The winter road conditions, characterized by snow and ice, also called for careful driving in Bremen and Lower Saxony. The police reported fewer accidents in Bremen and Bremerhaven, but traffic conditions are tense here too.

How to get through the winter safely

Winter roads pose challenges for all drivers. Slippery roads, reduced visibility and longer braking distances are just some of the problems that need to be overcome. Fani Zaneta, traffic safety consultant at the TÜV Association, warns: “The temperatures can quickly change around freezing point and drastically change the road conditions,” she explains. To be safe on the road, she recommends reducing the speed and increasing the distance to the vehicle in front. Trips should always be undertaken without any time pressure.

Before driving, vehicles should be completely cleared of ice and snow. Small viewing holes are not enough and result in possible fines. It is also advisable to use auxiliary heaters and ensure that winter or suitable all-weather tires are fitted. If you are well prepared for winter conditions, you can drive more relaxed.

On the road: drive smart, arrive safely

While driving, it is important to adapt your speed to the road and visibility conditions. In heavy snow or fog, when visibility is below 50 meters, you should drive a maximum of 50 km/h. It is important to drive calmly and evenly, avoid hectic maneuvers and drive in second gear when it is slippery to prevent the tires from spinning. It also makes sense to avoid sport mode in automatic vehicles - eco or winter programs should be used instead.

Drivers should be particularly careful about lightning ice, which often occurs when it rains or sprays on frozen roads. The danger is particularly high on bridges, depressions or in the shade. If there are warnings, it is often better to leave the car parked. Finally, the TÜV points out the importance of the winter tire requirement in Germany: Summer tires may not be used in winter conditions. A violation can result in a fine of at least 60 euros and one point in Flensburg.

The winter conditions have caused a lot of excitement on the roads in northern Germany. But if you are well prepared and heed the advice of the experts, you can get through the cold season safely. So stay alert and adapt your driving style to the conditions - then the journey will remain stress-free even in snow and slippery conditions!
