Bomb disposal in Osnabrück: 14,000 residents have to evacuate!

On Sunday, November 9th, 2025, there will be a major bomb disposal in Osnabrück. The city has already announced this measure in advance and informed residents accordingly. In October, four suspected unexploded bombs from the Second World War were discovered during exploratory work in the Lokviertel. These classic cars from another era pose a serious danger, which is why more than 14,000 people within a kilometer radius of the sites have to be evacuated, as NDR reported.

Residents have already been warned: they must leave their homes by 7 a.m. on Sunday. Facilities such as the Marienhospital and the Christian Children's Hospital are also located in the evacuation area, so that the patients are also safely accommodated there, but can no longer receive visitors. The city ensures that therapies and emergency operations at Marienhospital can continue as planned.

Evacuation measures and information

As early as 6 a.m., evacuation buses will drive from stops in the evacuation area to the evacuation center set up in the Schinkel comprehensive school. If you want to visit the hospital before 7 a.m., you should leave in good time, as it is no longer possible to leave or enter after this time. The main train station will also be closed from this point onwards and numerous bus traffic diversions will be set up to take safety precautions into account.

The city of Osnabrück has well-established processes for such situations, which have been tested several times in the past. Since construction work began in the Lokviertel, six evacuations have already taken place. The last major action of this kind was in July 2025, and the population is very familiar with these behaviors.

The historical context

The discussion about bomb disposal reminds not only of the dangers of the present, but also of the dark past of the Second World War. The unexploded bombs are a legacy of this time, when numerous explosive residues were left behind during military retreats. Among the numerous publications on the subject, the military history magazine, for example, highlights the aspect of evacuations during the war and describes how these still have an impact on the population today, as in the articles by Academia.edu is to be read.

The city will also provide support to affected residents in the evacuation area. So they receive a flyer with some discounts, for example for the zoo, to make the time of inconvenience a little more pleasant. Those who do not adhere to the evacuation instructions face severe fines of 300 euros.

Preparations for this special day are in full swing and the city will provide up-to-date information online to keep the population constantly informed. The challenges posed by such historical heirlooms continue to be present and demonstrate the need to always keep the safety of the population in mind.
