New youth parliament in Osnabrück: A breath of fresh air for young voices!
On December 3, 2025 it will be official: The new composition of the Osnabrück Youth Parliament for the term 2025 to 2027 has been determined. In an exciting election period from November 17th to 21st, 2025, 4,851 ballot papers made the decision for the 25 members aged 14 to 18. The election took place at almost all secondary schools in Osnabrück and in the House of Youth. The young people were able to vote for up to five candidates and made active use of their right to vote, as a total of 23,885 votes were cast. Regional Today reports that the constituent session of Parliament is already scheduled for December 10, 2025.
Only founded in 2013, the Osnabrück Youth Parliament has its own budget of 10,000 euros per year. This amount enables young people to realize their own projects and ideas and to actively intervene in city politics. In addition, since November 2020, one or more representatives of Parliament have had the right to make motions and speak in several political committees, such as the Youth Welfare Committee or the Urban Development Committee. Democratic Osnabrück also emphasizes that the members' term of office is two years and young people who live in Osnabrück or go to school there, are doing training or are doing voluntary service are eligible to vote.
The importance of political participation
Political engagement among young people is important in order to actively shape life in their city. According to the site Youth Involve This enables young people to influence their living conditions and society as a whole. The variety of ways to get involved includes local initiatives, youth councils and even submitting petitions.
Although there are over 500 active children's and youth parliaments in Germany, a survey shows that only around 3% of young people are currently involved in political parties. However, the majority of young people would like to be more actively involved in political processes. 80% of young people believe that it is important to be able to influence politics. But at the same time, studies show that many people tend not to feel heard in political discussions or are put off by the entire subject. In addition, 35% of young people find it discouraging to get involved in politics.
A look into the future
The Osnabrück Youth Parliament elections are a step in the right direction. They offer young people the opportunity to contribute their opinions and ideas to official discussions and to actively work on projects that affect their surroundings. The new composition and the upcoming decisions in parliament could promote a wave of interest and participation among peers and thus have a lasting impact on the political culture in Osnabrück.
