The punctuality of rail connections in Lower Saxony is repeatedly questioned, and the latest analyzes show that some routes fall well short of expectations. A comprehensive study by the Lower Saxony State Local Transport Company (LNVG) has shown that the RB47 railway line between Uelzen and Braunschweig is considered the least punctual connection in the state, with a punctuality rate of just 59.17%. But it's not just the RB47 that has problems. The Nordwestbahn line RB58 between Bremen, Vechta and Osnabrück has also left people at a loss. According to LNVG figures, only 68.73% of trains on the RB58 ran on time in 2024. The evaluation also shows that single-track sections and outdated technology do not help to minimize the problems. The ranking of the least punctual trains is topped by several other connections. The RE60 (WestfalenBahn) hardly achieves better values with 64.56% punctuality, followed by RB38 and RB58, which are also not far from the critical mark. The Metronome has four of the ten least punctual lines in its portfolio, including the RB31, which has a punctuality of 67.69%. With an average of 83.99% for all railway lines in Lower Saxony, it is clear that there is still room for improvement.
A connection that continues to have problems is the RB37 between Bremen and Uelzen, which only had a punctuality of 75.41% in 2024, making it the most unreliable railway line with the most failures. According to LNVG, 2.8 million passengers traveled on the Osnabrück-Bremen-Vechta route in 2024, so tardiness is not only a nuisance, but also a major economic problem.
A ray of hope for travelers
But there is also positive news: The most punctual connection in Lower Saxony is the RB56 between Bad Bentheim and Neuenhaus, which achieves a whopping 99.20% punctuality. Followed by the RB32 (97.92% on time) and the RB44 (97.61% on time). LNVG regularly updates the punctuality data of the relevant connections so that travelers are always informed.
The problems are complex and primarily concern technical and infrastructural aspects. Long-term solutions are essential, and it is up to those responsible to sustainably improve the quality and reliability of rail transport in Lower Saxony. Despite all the unpunctuality, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming years.
