Storm slows down winter sports in the Harz: ski lifts remain closed!
The winter conditions in the Harz are currently mixed. While the first snowflakes have fallen in the high mountains around Braunlage, strong winds mean that the ski slopes have to remain closed today, January 2, 2026. Operations manager Fabian Brockschmidt expresses concern: “With a maximum of ten centimeters of snow, the basis for good slope preparation is simply too thin.” In order to bring the slopes into usable condition, at least 30 to 50 centimeters would be required for the snow groomer to be able to work at all.
The Wurmberg cable car, one of the central connections for winter sports enthusiasts, is currently out of service due to squalls. However, there is still hope for improvement: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the wind is expected to ease in the evening and perhaps even bring five to ten centimeters of new snow. Skiing could begin again at the Hexenritt next weekend, and tobogganing would also be conceivable there, even if it remains uncertain at the moment.
Activities for winter sports fans
The bad weather report has not only increased the demand for winter sports activities in Braunlage, but has also fueled the passion of many holidaymakers. Braunlage is known to be the winter sports center in the Harz Mountains, with over 50 kilometers of cross-country ski trails, 17 downhill slopes, four toboggan runs and around 20 kilometers of well-maintained winter hiking trails. The altitude of up to 971 meters on the Wurmberg ensures overall good snow conditions when the weather permits. The ski meadow at the town hall is particularly ideal for families and offers floodlit skiing on Fridays.
The region's typical ski areas such as the Matthias-Schmidt-Berg in Sankt Andreasberg and the Hohegeiß Ski Center are suitable for all age groups. Five slopes, two chair lifts and a drag lift await you here, while the small ski areas on Sonnenberg also offer slopes that are understandable for beginners. For the quieter winter lovers, there are well-prepared trails that are ideal for cross-country skiing. A selection of circuit trails and other trails in Braunlage ensure a varied winter day.
Weather and safety
However, visitors to the Harz are advised to consider the weather situation when making their plans. The icy temperatures in particular make the roads slippery in places. The lakes in the Harz are also frozen due to the cold, but the ice cover in these regions is very thin, so entering them is not without risk. These safety precautions are essential given the current weather situation.
The demand for gastronomy and leisure options in the evening has increased, from après-ski parties in Braunlage to campfire evenings in the Hohegeiß Ski Center, there are a variety of options for relaxation. It remains to be seen whether nature will continue to spoil us with snow and whether the lifts will be able to open the slopes to visitors at the weekend. In the meantime, it is important for all winter sports enthusiasts to stay well informed. Current information on winter sports conditions is provided daily, so that excursions into the beautiful Harz landscape can be organized safely and smoothly.
