Hiro remains independent: Planned takeover by Autoland AG failed!
An exciting chapter in the automotive trade ends abruptly: the planned takeover of the traditional company Hiro by Autoland AG failed on November 1, 2025. az-online reports that Hiro's management announced on October 30 that the purchase agreement had been canceled by mutual consent.
Hiro, which was founded in 1928 and now employs more than 170 people at its locations in Aurich, Emden, Leer, Oldenburg and Wiesmoor, remains independent. The company markets over 3,000 vehicles every year, primarily models from Opel, Ford, Nissan and Etrusco motorhomes. They are one of the established names in German vehicle sales, and the cancellation of the purchase agreement came after final coordination discussions in which operational issues and the overall scope of the business were discussed.
The background to the takeover
The takeover was originally scheduled to take place on January 1, 2026, with the aim of creating stability and new opportunities for Hiro. Motor vehicle operation highlights that numerous dealerships in the automotive sector will have changed ownership in 2024. Autoland AG, which positions itself as “Germany’s largest car discounter”, also wanted to further expand its market position through this takeover.
This development was followed with excitement throughout the industry. Regionally, there were mergers and acquisitions among other car dealers, but the details of the termination of the contract between Hiro and Autoland were not published because they agreed not to disclose. Autoland AG has not yet issued a statement on the reasons for the failure of the takeover.
Market development in the automotive trade
The situation at Hiro reflects a larger trend in automotive retail. Mass General Brigham highlights the need for companies to adapt in a changing market. The increasing number of ownership changes in the industry is an indication that many dealers need to rethink their strategies and redefine their market position.
Particularly noticeable for 2024 are Mercedes-Benz's announcements that it will sell the last 80 branches. This approach could also have an impact on the competitive landscape in Lower Saxony, where Hiro can continue to assert itself.
Despite the failed takeover, Hiro remains a stable provider in the region that wants to continue to exist in the future with its many years of know-how, its committed employees and a clear brand identity. It remains to be seen how the markets will develop and what opportunities and challenges companies like Hiro will face.
