Tragedy on the B195: pedestrian run over by a van!
A tragic accident shook the community of Bienenbüttel on October 23rd on Federal Highway 195, also known as Lüneburger Straße. At around 11 a.m., a 44-year-old driver of an Iveco van wanted to turn left when he overlooked a 92-year-old pedestrian. She was just crossing the road when the accident occurred. As a result, the lady fell and was run over by the van.
Despite the rapid response of rescue workers, the woman died while being transported by rescue helicopter to a special clinic in Hamburg. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are currently underway so that all circumstances can be clarified. Accidents like these make us pause and show how important it is to improve road safety. AZ Online reported on the dramatic events and the consequences for the affected families.
Rising accident numbers at a glance
Manfred Wirsch, President of the German Road Safety Council, calls for special attention to be paid to pedestrians in traffic areas. Over the past three years, the number of pedestrians killed or injured in accidents has increased. In order to stop this development, the federal government is working on a pedestrian traffic strategy that aims to comprehensively reform the road traffic regulations. This should make it easier to set up zebra crossings in the future, even if there is no “particular local risk situation”.
Safety measures in focus
The planned changes to the road traffic regulations also enable municipalities to allocate colored areas for pedestrians and cyclists and to impose a speed limit of 30 km/h on playgrounds and busy school routes on main roads. These are important measures to improve child protection and general road safety. The DVR has even drawn up ten specific demands to prevent fatal accidents in road traffic, including increased traffic monitoring and appropriate speed limits.
It is clear that we all share responsibility. Each of us should pay attention to how and where we move in traffic to avoid such tragedies in the future and to raise awareness about being safe on the roads.
