Bonn is fighting for playoff chances: the second leg against Vechta is coming up!
The Telekom Baskets Bonn are facing an important challenge in the basketball Bundesliga. After being eliminated from the cup, where they lost 90:107 to the Gladiators Trier last Monday, the league is coming into focus with high pressure. The playoffs or at least qualification for the play-ins are on the team's wish list. Next Saturday at 6:30 p.m. the Baskets will face Rasta Vechta, who have already cemented a solid position this season with two wins from three games. But coach Marko Stankovic's statement is clear: "We have to improve our defense significantly," said the coach, who described the performance against Trier as the worst of the season.
A look at the numbers shows why this reminder is incredibly important. Bonn conceded a whopping 58 points against Trier at halftime, which left the defense under criticism. In addition, the offensive values could be much higher: the free throw rate is a meager 46.1% and the three-point rate is only 23.4%. The Baskets urgently want to change that, especially in a duel against a strong Vechta team.
The encounter in numbers
Rasta Vechta has established itself as a serious opponent this season. They won the final cup game after an impressive comeback after trailing by 18 points. A win against the Niners Chemnitz ended with 89:86, and Vechta was also able to hold its own in the quarterfinals against Baskets Oldenburg. With an outstanding guard trio – consisting of Tommy Kuhse (20.3 points), Alonzo Verge Jr. (17.7 points) and TJ Bamba (14.3 points) – they are well positioned. Kuhse has been particularly in form in recent appearances, scoring 27 points in the FIBA Europe Cup against Sporting CP Lisbon.
The last encounters between Bonn and Vechta provided exciting moments. The first game of the season ended with a narrow defeat for Bonn (79:84), with Kuhse already scoring 27 points and playing a key role in the success. Bonn now hopes to turn things around with a strong defensive performance. Head coach Roel Moors emphasizes the enormous importance of defense for the upcoming second leg, especially since a win with a difference of at least six points would be necessary in order to score the important points in the playoff race and win the direct comparison.
The return of the old friends
An exciting aspect of the game will be the return of Joel Aminu and Mike Kessens, who both used to play for Vechta and are now wearing the Telekom Baskets uniform. Aminu in particular will be eager to challenge his former teammates. His focus is on defending against Verge Jr., who is considered one of the strongest players in the league. However, Aminu is currently struggling with a weak shooting rate of 10.5% from the three-point line. Jonathan Bähre also remains questionable for the game, which doesn't make the situation any easier for Bonn.
Amid all the sporting challenges, there is also positive news from the Baskets: the team has started an environmental initiative. For every point scored, one square meter of forest is protected, supported by Deutsche Telekom AG and the Bonn company axxessio. With this campaign, the Telekom Baskets are not only showing their commitment on the field, but also for a good cause.
The basketball world in Germany has experienced an enormous boost in recent years, and the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga has established itself as a central platform. Around 68 million people in Germany have a connection to basketball, but general interest is stagnating. However, the last title win for the German national team at the Basketball World Cup in 2023 and the European Championship title in 2025 give cause for hope for a new basketball era. Dennis Schröder, who played a key role in both successes, is considered the best German player and MVP of the tournament.
Let's go, Baskets! The fans are hoping for an exciting and successful encounter on Saturday. The time is ripe for a comeback in the race for the playoff places!
