International students start the winter semester 2025 in Vechta!

Things are getting busy again in Vechta: the winter semester 2025/26 has begun at the university, and the International Office welcomes numerous international exchange students. This breath of fresh air of international cooperation brings 44 students from 12 different countries to Vechta, including Cameroon, Kosovo, South Korea and even Japan. Some might say: There's something going on! The intercultural exchange is considered valuable not only by the teachers, but also by the city.

Prof. Dr. Christopher Osterhaus highlights the important role of intercultural exchange for the students and the region. Mayor Kristian Kater welcomes the new guests in the town hall and describes the University of Vechta as a true flagship for the city that makes a significant contribution to economic development. With the winter semester, the educational paths are now even more colorful.

A well-organized starting program

An important component for a successful start is the “Smoother Start Program”. This program not only offers new students an introduction to the place of study, but also a preparatory German course and intercultural training. Support is also available with moving formalities and enrollment. How does that work? Registering your home address at the Citizens' Office is required for newly arrived students. This is the first step to feeling really at home here.

The VIP mentoring program (Vechta’s International Mentoring Program) ensures that students are networked with fellow Vechta students. This can be a great help, especially in the beginning, to make contacts and cope with everyday life more easily.

Financing and living expenses

But not everything is just an afternoon walk: financing your studies is a crucial issue for international students. In order to obtain a visa and a residence permit, they must provide proof of financial resources. German authorities charge around 992 euros per month, which amounts to around 11,904 euros per year. This is intended to ensure that students are able to finance their studies independently. Many people therefore have to resort to part-time jobs to cover their living costs.

Cost overview amount
Dorm room (including additional costs) 250€
Catering 180€
Clothing 50€
Health insurance and liability insurance 125€
Study documents 60€
Telephone and Internet 55€
Leisure and sports 50€
In total 770€

The rental costs in Vechta are between 170 and 350 euros per month. So what hurdles are there for international students? Many of them first have to get a foothold in their new surroundings and make their plans for the future. Study life in Vechta could be not only academically but also personally formative.

In the end, it should be noted that the University of Vechta and the city are working together to give their international guests a warm welcome. Who knows, maybe one or two exchange students will become real Vechta residents – with a good knack for intercultural exchange.
