Vandalism in Cappeln and Cloppenburg: Witnesses urgently wanted!
In recent days, several cases of vandalism and other crimes have been reported in northern Germany, causing excitement in the region. In various places, including Cappeln and Cloppenburg, public facilities and private property were significantly damaged.
A current incident concerns a chewing gum machine in Cappeln, which was allegedly damaged by fireworks. The damage is estimated at 250 euros. The investigation into the time of the crime is ongoing, and the Cloppenburg police are asking witnesses to call 0447118600 to provide relevant information. Vandalism was also observed beyond the city limits, such as a similar incident in Schwanewede, where a chewing gum machine was also damaged by fireworks on November 12, 2025. Two young people were involved and after the crime they fled across Posener Straße on an e-scooter. Police are profiling the suspect, one of the suspects had dark hair and a black jacket, while the other had blonde hair. Citizens are cordially invited to pass on information to the Ritterhude police on 04292/811740 if they observed anything.
Actual damages add up
The numbers are anything but encouraging: In Cloppenburg, between December 30, 2025 and January 2, 2026, several pieces of property damage were discovered in the multi-generation park at Friesoyther Straße 8. In particular, the public sanitary facilities and three window panes of the youth club were the target of stone throwing, which caused a total damage of around 4,000 euros. In this case, witnesses are also asked to contact the same number as previously mentioned.
The city is also facing several road accidents. A particularly alarming incident occurred on January 2, 2026, when a 30-year-old tested positive for narcotics after losing control of his vehicle. A blood sample was ordered and further travel was prohibited. This highlights how the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs are still a major problem.
First steps against juvenile crime
It remains to be seen whether the increase in property damage and vandalism in the region is linked to an increase in juvenile crime. However, experts emphasize that many perpetrators of vandalism are often children and young people who act in groups and whose behavior is also influenced by peer pressure and the influence of alcohol. It is important to engage in dialogue with youth and take preventative measures to address such incidents. The police offer appropriate advice on the subject of juvenile crime and recommend taking deliberate action at an early stage.
Citizens are called upon to be vigilant and not only ensure safety within their own homes, but also protect the community. This is the only way to promote positive development in the region.
