Warning about heat: Homeless people and seniors are particularly at risk!

Summer has arrived in the north and has hit the region with bright weather and high temperatures. In many cities, people can look forward to summer temperatures, with highs ranging from 22 degrees in the Halligen to an impressive 33 degrees in Helmstedt. This remarkable weather, how NDR reported is expected to last until at least Friday.

However, not everything is all sunshine and roses. It is also warned that showers or even thunderstorms can occur across southern Lower Saxony up to the Elbe and as far as Western Pomerania. Experts emphasize that the high temperatures pose a serious source of danger, especially for homeless, elderly and sick people. Contact points and shelters in northern German cities are of great importance here.

Heat protection measures

In Hamburg, for example, the Diakonie midnight bus runs not only at night but also during the day to distribute drinking containers to people in need. This initiative is part of a broader plan to improve heat protection in the city. The AWO emphasizes that low-income households often do not have the necessary resources to protect themselves from the heat. In addition, free sunscreen with SPF 50 is distributed at sports facilities to protect the population from sunburn.

The clinics in Hamburg are also noticing alarming figures: the heat wave is leading to a significant increase in emergency patients. A clear request to nursing homes and hospitals is to implement better heat protection measures in order to protect particularly vulnerable groups.

Weather warnings and natural hazards

But the weather situation doesn't just bring with it high temperatures. A severe weather warning for parts of Lower Saxony due to heavy rain, squalls and hail makes it clear that nature also has its dark sides. The fire department is well prepared and has taken measures to respond to possible forest fires, which are highly dangerous in Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Here, too, people without a permanent address are in a particularly precarious situation.

A pleasant side aspect is the observation of the Perseid shooting star shower, which is active until August 24th. The nights in the north promise to be largely cloud-free, which reinforces the idea of romantic shooting stars and can offer a beautiful end to a warm summer day.

Summer in the north is therefore diverse: with heat, thunderstorms and a variety of initiatives that aim to accompany and protect people through this extreme temperature period. Stay safe and enjoy the sun, but don't forget to look after yourself and others!
