Fight for Voslapper Groden: Nature conservation vs. Energy transition in focus!

In the debate about the planned development in the Voslapper Groden Nord , different interests collide. On the one hand, the nature conservation associations that warn of interventions in this protected area are, while on the other hand, the economy, represented by the Wilhelmshaven Hafenwirtschafts-Vereinung (WHV), underlines the importance of this location for future energy supply. The discussion about this controversial topic is increasingly gaining drive, especially after the NWZ reported that the area of about 145 hectares is part of the European protection area "Natura 2000".

The WHV emphasizes the strategic importance of the Voslapper Groden for the development of the energy infrastructure in Germany. Hans-Joachim Uhlendorf from the WHV described the challenge as a "historical task" and refers to the need to provide hydrogen, offshore stream and alternative fuels for energy supply. The port development plans that have been in the case for this area since 2017 provide for the use of the site for port -oriented economic systems, which is affected by the conservationists.

The fact that the lever for possible removal of the protection area lies in the national security interests makes the alarm bells ring. Finally, many criticize that Tes is hiding in their planning behind the “Green Hydrogen” label, while fossil -based energy sources are to continue to be processed. At this point, however, the nature conservation associations agree: Nature needs special protection even in times of energy transition, and alternative locations for projects should not be put in protected areas.

The search for solutions

Despite the resistance, there are also efforts to find sustainable solutions in Wilhelmshaven. It is discussed, such as the creation of coherence and compensation areas in order to better take the ecological concerns into account. According to the WHV, 30% more space for nature conservation should be claimed. This perspective could be a way to bridge the gap between nature conservation and economic interest. The harbor projects carried out so far, such as the establishment of a river tern colony or newly created forest areas, are also steps that point in the right direction.
