TRK's old clothing container in Wolfsburg reopened - donations asked!

Wolfsburg, Deutschland - The old clothing containers of the German Red Cross (DRK) on Schreberstrasse have reopened after a closure around two months. The reason for the closure was an oversupply of garbage that was disposed of by citizens in the containers. Tanja Weiler from the DRK Wolfsburg city center explains that some containers are reactivated to increase the donations for the clothing store. So far there is no complete list of the opened containers, but the container near the Hellwinkel School is now open for donations.

As reporting the DRK, 70 percent of the thrown clothes no longer work. This presents the employees with great challenges, because the donations have to be sorted - and this is becoming increasingly difficult because many bags build up. While the containers were closed, there were numerous inquiries from citizens whether the DRK continues to accept donations, which shows that the need for well -preserved textiles is large.

The DRK in search of supportive hands

The DRK not only accepts clothing, but also well -preserved shoes, bed linen, towels, dishes and functioning electro items. If you want to give up your donations personally, you can do this from Monday to Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the clothing store at Walter-Flex-Weg 12. The containers are accessible every day. However, it is urgently asked to dispose of broken or heavily dirty clothing in residual waste.

The textiles are sorted again in the clothing store and can be offered at affordable prices. A jacket can already be purchased there for three euros. The opening times of the clothing store are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. and Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale is financed by important projects of the DRK, such as the Youth Red Cross, the psychosocial emergency care and the support of aid projects in Ukraine.

Current market and challenges of the old dress collection

The challenge of the old clothing collection does not only affect Wolfsburg. In general, the market for old clothes is under pressure. The prices have been falling for months, while the costs for electricity and heating increase. In cities like Nuremberg, it is even considered to reduce every fifth container. Hermann Guth, chairman of the Red Cross in Nuremberg, reports on drastic revenue, which fell from 250 euros per ton in early 2024 to just 50 euros. One reason for these developments is the occasional abuse of the containers, where unusable objects are often thrown in instead of well -preserved clothing.

In the context of the new EU regulation of January 2024, which prohibits the disposal of broken clothing in residual waste, it will be crucial that consumers responsibly dispose of their clothing waste. Responsibility for the implementation of this regulation lies with the municipalities, and versatile information campaigns could help to raise awareness of the correct disposal.

In order to counter the nationwide trend, the DRK continues to seek volunteers to support the sorting, edition and sale of textiles. Interested parties can contact the DRK-Wolfsburg city center on the phone number (0 53 61) 8 90 69 59.

A strong awareness of the importance of the old clothing containers could not only help to meet local needs, but also to promote an environmentally friendly solution in dealing with textiles. In view of the current situation and the challenges in front of which the DRK is facing, it is all the more important that citizens contribute to donations with a good hand and use the old clothing containers responsibly.
