VW currywurst now in the supermarket: enjoyment in just 7 minutes!
The traditional Volkswagen brand is bringing a piece of German food culture to supermarkets: From mid-June 2025, currywurst lovers can enjoy the legendary VW currywurst as a ready meal in selected Edeka and Netto branches. This product, consisting of sliced sausage in original VW ketchup, is prepared in the microwave in just six to seven minutes. *News38* reports that the sausage will initially be introduced in four Edeka regions: Berlin, Edeka Nord (Hamburg), Edeka Hessenring (Kassel) and Edeka Minden (Lower Saxony).
The presentation of the new ready meal took place on May 27, 2025 at the VW factory in Wolfsburg. The newly designed Currywurst Hall was also officially inaugurated on this occasion. VW head of gastronomy Markus Greiner emphasized the great importance of currywurst for the company, which has been relying on this tasty product since 1973.
Currywurst in the supermarket – a test run
The decision to now offer currywurst in supermarkets is no coincidence. According to *LzDirekt*, VW wants to continue its success story with this measure and make it accessible to a wider audience. Initially, the product will be available in the refrigerated shelves of the affected Edeka and Netto stores, with expansion throughout Germany planned in the long term. This step serves as a test run to evaluate demand.
Although VW has increasingly tested vegetarian and vegan options in its factory canteens in recent years, demand for meat-free alternatives to currywurst is estimated to be low. Dietmar Schulz, head of food production at VW, made it clear that no vegetarian or vegan version of the new currywurst will be launched. He emphasizes that separating the production lines is too complicated.
A cult snack with history
Since its invention, currywurst has established itself as a fast food classic in Germany and is consumed around 800 million times every year. It is particularly popular in Berlin - an estimated 70 million pieces are sold there every year. *N-TV* describes the controversial origin of the currywurst, which is claimed by various regions of Germany. The best-known legend says that on September 4, 1949, Herta Heuwer created a special sauce in Berlin that still gives currywurst its unique taste today.
To honor its tradition and importance, Herta Heuwer is officially honored in Berlin and the city holds the record for the largest currywurst in the world. The market potential is gigantic, because the currywurst has not only established itself as a snack classic, but has also found its place in upscale restaurants. The “Adlon” hotel now offers a gourmet version for 26 euros, which is refined with exotic ingredients and even gold leaf.
With the introduction of the ready meal version, VW not only wants to stay true to its traditions, but also take the next steps towards a tasty future. It remains to be seen how the German market will react to this innovation.
