Dramatic vow in Brunsbüttel: 200 soldiers swear loyalty!

Today was a special day for around 200 soldiers in Brunsbüttel. On September 5, 2025, they took their oath at the lock and successfully completed their basic training. This ceremony, which is part of the “West Coast Pledge Association”, took place in a celebratory setting and attracted over 500 spectators who followed this significant moment. The recruits were prepared for this day by their training facility, including the Air Force NCO School in Heide and the Cyber and Information Space Training Center in Flensburg. The Special Pioneer Regiment 164 “Nordfriesland” from Husum was also involved in this ceremony, which marks the end of an important phase of life.

The oath that the soldiers took is not only a legal act, but also a strong confession. “I swear to serve the Federal Republic of Germany faithfully and to bravely defend the rights and freedom of the German people,” says the oath for professional soldiers and temporary soldiers. The oath of service, which is affirmed in this solemn ceremony, creates a connection between the soldiers and our country's community of values. As the Wikipeda page illustrates, the oath fulfills, among other things, integrative, security and educational functions and has a symbolic meaning for loyalty and solidarity with the state and the people.

Increasing popularity of the Bundeswehr

Now one might ask why the Bundeswehr continues to become more attractive. Quite simply: the number of applications and recruitments for professional soldiers has increased across Germany. In 2024, around 1,500 more soldiers were hired than in the previous year, reflecting a trend that continues today. By the end of June 2025, there had already been 486 new hires in Schleswig-Holstein. This is also reflected in the fact that over 1,000 of the approximately 20,000 new hires lived in Schleswig-Holstein. A clear sign that service in the Bundeswehr is particularly popular for young people who want to take responsibility for democracy, freedom and peace.

For many soldiers, this path also opens up new perspectives. In addition to serving the community, personal and professional development is on offer. The Bundeswehr promotes team-oriented work and discipline - qualities that are of great value not only in the military but also in civilian life. The Bundeswehr career portal explains that the change in the world - politically and socially - places new demands on the troops, and at the same time the opportunities for development are appealing.

Celebratory traditions and community

As with every important event in the Bundeswehr, the vow is a valuable tradition. The process is characterized by symbolic elements: entry of the troop flag, procession of honor, speeches by important personalities and, last but not least, the vow chant and the national anthem. These ceremonies often take place midway through basic training and are of great importance not only to the soldiers' families but also to the general public. Here it becomes clear how strong the connection to one's own country and the community has grown, while at the same time the challenges that the soldiers take on are acknowledged.

The ceremony in Brunsbüttel is not only a celebration for the graduates, but also a sign of the trust that society places in the Bundeswehr. It is the beginning of a path that is characterized by commitment, responsibility and belonging to something bigger. A path that the new generation of soldiers is taking with pride.
