Red oak scandal in Elmshorn: unknown people poison trees with glyphosate!

A worrying incident is causing a stir in Elmshorn: two red oaks in Schooltwiete were apparently poisoned with glyphosate. This unpleasant news was officially confirmed today by the Bad Segeberg police department. Unknown perpetrators have caused significant damage to the trees, which were already showing signs of disease. The city of Elmshorn then filed a criminal complaint at the beginning of July for an environmental crime, as this was a clear attack on nature.

According to the police, around 80-90% of the foliage and the young shoot tips of the trees show signs of browning and stunting. A first commissioned report was now able to confirm the poisoning. It is suspected that large amounts of herbicides were already introduced into the soil at the beginning of 2025, which provides further evidence of the environmentally harmful acts. The financial damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros, which represents a significant burden for the city and the municipal economy.

Preservation of trees recommended

The laboratory tests carried out have now finally confirmed the suspicion of glyphosate. An expert recommends continuing to monitor the trees and, if possible, preserving them, even if possible deadwood formation is to be expected. The city of Elmshorn therefore sees the need to continue to keep an eye on both the trees and the investigations.

The investigation is being led by the Elmshorn police, specifically the motorway and district departments. The responsible officials have already asked for information from the public. Anyone who has relevant information about the perpetrators or the incident can call 04121-4092-0. Such environmental crimes cannot go unchallenged, and the public is asked to take part in the investigation.

It remains to be hoped that those responsible for this environmental crime will be found and such questionable actions will be avoided in the future. In times of increasing environmental awareness, it is important that every individual stands up for nature and takes action against such crimes.
